McDonald’s Agrees to Pay First Settlement to Franchise Workers Worth $3.75 Million

To settle a lawsuit alleging that it was accountable for labor law violations, McDonald’s Corp has agreed to pay $3.75 million to a California franchisee. This signifies what lawyers said was the first time the company has cleared legal claims by a group of U.S. employees at one of its franchises.

In a filing in U.S. district court in San Francisco, lawyers representing said

On Friday, lawyers said in a filing in US district court in San Franciso that Illinois-based McDonald’s would compensate the workers $1.75 million in back pay and damages and $2 million in legal fees. The lawyers represent around 800 workers at five restaurants held by a single franchisee.

o-mcdonaldsThe settlement occurs as the fastfood chain company copes with contentions before two U.S. agencies. The arguments are based on allegations that it is a “joint employer” of workers at franchise restaurants. This designation could make McDonald’s responsible for legal violations by franchisees. Further, it would compel  the company to deal with employees who unionize. In any way, a federal judge must approve the settlement.

The company is not a joint employer of franchise workers, McDonald’s spokeswoman Terri Hickey said on Monday.

She said that the company entered into this mutually suitable resolution to avoid the disruption and costs associated with a prolonged legal action.

The 2014 lawsuit asserted McDonald’s and Smith Family LP, the franchisee, disregarded California law by neglecting to pay overtime. Further, they failed to keep accurate pay records and did not reimburse workers for time spent cleaning uniforms. The franchisee earlier reconciled the claims for $700,000.

Last year, a judge declared that McDonald’s was not the complainants’ joint employer under state and federal laws. However, he said the company could still be deemed liable if the employees believed McDonald’s was their employer.

Lawyers for the workers, in Friday’s court filing, said the settlement was the first for McDonald’s in a class action case passed by franchise employees.

According to the court filing, the deal would also oblige McDonald’s to educate the franchisee, Smith Family, on the use of corporate software. These programs were designed to guarantee accordance with California’s distinctively stringent employment laws.

More legal woes

Meanwhile, McDonald’s is at the center of legal proceedings at the National Labor Relations Board. The trial could resolve whether the company is a joint employer under the federal law presiding union organizing.

Moreover, a union-backed group earlier this month said it had filed sexual harassment grievances against McDonald’s. The cases were filed with a federal agency on behalf of 15 workers. Most of the employees worked at franchise restaurants.

Australia, Indonesia to Hold Joint South China Sea Patrols

On Tuesday, Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said that Australia is contemplating on joint naval patrols with Indonesia in the disputed South China Sea.

Indonesia’s invitation for joint patrols at a bilateral meeting in Bali last week was in line with Australia’s policies of exerting its right of freedom of navigation, Bishop said.

Bishop told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio that patrolling the contested waters is in accordance with international law. It also shows the country’s support for peace and stability in the region.

Australia is a steadfast ally of the United States. It has earlier elicited criticism from China for conducting surveillance flights over disputed islands in the South China Sea. The country also supports U.S. freedom of navigation exercises there.

The South China Sea, where close to $5 trillion of sea-borne trade transits annually, is almost wholly claimed by China. Last month, China advised Australia to act and speak cautiously on the South China Sea.

The Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei and Taiwan also have claims on parts of the sea. The area is considered to have heavy deposits of oil and gas.

Indonesia and Australia already carry out joint sea patrols in the Timor Sea as part of the countries’ collaboration on battling illegal fishing and people smuggling.

malaysian-navyBishop said that Australia and Indonesia would advise other nations in the region of any scheduled exercise.

A part of Australia’s commitment

She said that the sea patrols are a regular part of what the Australian navy does. This is part of their commitment in the region. Such operations are in line with Australia’s right of freedom of navigation including in the South China Sea.

In July, following a case brought by the Philippines, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague said China’s assertions to the waterway were invalid. Beijing, which has erected several artificial islands with landing strips in the sea, has rejected the ruling.

UNICEF: Air Pollution Deadly Hazard to 2 Billion Children

New Delhi, India, – Over the weekend, Indian skies were filled with extravagant fireworks. The celebration, however, adds another significant misery to their daily lives. The smoke coming from the fireworks aggravated the city’s air pollution problems and is a severe health risk to residents, particularly children.

New Delhi turns out to be one of the most polluted cities in the world.

Deadly health hazard

According to The United Nations Children’s Fund report, air pollution worldwide affects 2 billion children. A third of the statistical data lives in Northern India and nearby countries. The outcome could not have been more serious, if not deadly. Serious health problems can be developed in prolonged exposure to air pollution which includes lung and brain damage to top the list.

Out of the 2 billion children worldwide, 300 million, including 200 million in Southeast Asia suffer unhealthy exposure. These children are subjected to the pollution level six times more that the average of the World Health Organization standard.

Sure enough, the cause of the pollution is the customary garbage burning of residents to stay warm in winter. Hence, air pollution in the Indian capital is at its highest during winter which is further exacerbated by the season’s weak airstreams.

The Diwali Effect

Prior to the much anticipated Hindu holiday, the Diwali festival, experts noted the high levels of concentration of microscopic lung- obstructing particles called PM 2.5. On Friday, the presence of PM 2.5 recorded was beyond 300 micrograms per cubic meter.

india-master1050After the festive celebration, PM 2.5 levels rose above 900 mcg per cubic meter. The World Health Organization recommends no more than 10 mcg per cubic meter exposure to PM 2.5. Diwali’s aftermath pollution on Monday was more than 90 times greater than normal.

Correspondingly, local officials released health warnings mostly for children, elderly and to people suffering respiratory or heart problems. The notice instructs residents to just stay indoors because of the pollution. The nearby states of Punjab and Haryana worsened the condition because of an on-going burning of spent agricultural crops.

An 18-year-old student in Delhi, Dharmendra said, “My eyes are irritated, I’m coughing and I find it difficult to breathe”. He added that because of the pollution, he does not “go out so much nowadays.” The teenager is using only one name, an ordinary custom in India.

Health disaster

The executive director of the Centre for Science and Environment, Anumita Roy Chowdhury said, “Pollution levels every winter gallop, and we are already beginning to see the signs of it”.

Several local studies show that a third of the city’s children have acquired lung and respiratory illnesses which “signals health disaster”, according to Chowdhury.

Children are more vulnerable to develop air pollution related diseases since they breathe twice as fast compared to adults. Their brain and body are taking in more air while their immune systems are still developing.

According to UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake, “The impact is commensurately shocking”. A study published on Monday showed that 600,000 children not more than 5 years old are dying worldwide because of air pollution related problems. He added that “Millions more suffer from respiratory diseases that diminish their resilience and affect their physical and cognitive development.”

The Real Deal

Out of the total 2.26 billion children worldwide, 2 billion children suffered from air pollution; 620 million in South Asia, mostly in northern India, 520 million children in Africa and 450 million, chiefly in China.

The report was taken in ‘combined satellite images’ of air pollution with ground data to pinpoint demographic patterns of the highest risk areas. For the WHO, it is a very alarming state where a huge total of the population were exposed to unhealthy air.

“Change the Air”

New Delhi, well aware of their air pollution situation started to pass legislation to control the worsening condition.

They started to ban cargo trucks from main highways and require drivers to purchase new vehicles which can meet the higher emission standards. They created a strategic limitation of the number of vehicles on the road and planned experimental traffic control.

pollutionHowever, other major pollution sources like construction dust, burning wood or kerosene remains unmonitored.

Authorities also turn to mobile phones for their advocacy. Last week they launched “Change the Air” app. They hope it will spark a chain reaction for residents to send in photos and report illegal sources of pollution.

Status Quo at Contested Scarborough Shoal has not changed — China

The situation at the contested Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea “has not changed and will not change”, China said on Monday. This after the Philippines said Chinese ships that barred the area for four years had stopped bullying its fishermen.

On Sunday, Philippine security officials said China had reduced its naval presence at the shoal. The change occurred after President Rodrigo Duterte’s visit to Beijing. Duterte’s state visit was intended at mending ties and wooing investment.

The conditions behind China’s seeming softening of its position are unclear, though the disputed territory is important for the expansive balance of power in the South China Sea.

Hua Chunying, China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, was questioned about Philippine fishermen entering the area unhindered. She said China at all times had “normal administration” over the Scarborough Shoal.

chinese-vessel“The relevant situation has not changed and will not change,” she told a regular briefing.

Hua said Duterte’s trip to Beijing demonstrated a general improvement in relations.

Since appropriating the Scarborough Shoal in 2012, China had prevented fishermen from fishing in the area.

Philippine fishermen said that Chinese boats had left them alone as they returned from the area during the weekend with loads of fish.

It infuriated the Chinese when the previous Philippine government filed a case at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague in 2013. This was after China started blocking its fishermen from the prime fishing spot.

The tribunal ruled in July in favor of the Philippines, which China declines to accept. The court declared that no one country had sovereign rights over the shoal. Further, as a customary fishing ground, Philippine, Chinese and Vietnamese were entitled to access it.

Duterte thaws the ice

After Duterte took office four months ago, a frigid Philippine-China relationship improved considerably. The Philippine president began praising China as he denounced long-standing ally the United States in a reversal of his predecessor’s foreign policy.

politics-duterteHermogenes Esperon, Duterte’s national security adviser, confirmed there had been no arrangement between the two countries about the Scarborough Shoal.

The dispute had not been settled and the Philippines would reaffirm its rights when bilateral talks resume, he said. Though he acknowledged that “the climate has changed”.

“They have coastguard ships there, there are no more navy ships and our fishermen are no longer accosted, they are not driven away,” Esperon said.

“In short, they are more friendly now.”

After Weeklong Pursuit, Oklahoma Man Accused of Double Murder Killed in Shootout

OKLAHOMA – A man who had been on the run for nearly a week was killed on Sunday night in a shootout with police. He was suspected of slaying two relatives and trying to behead them.

Local media reports quoting police sources said Michael Vance, 38, was killed by police after a caller reported a car corresponding to one purportedly stolen by Vance was seen near Hammon, in western Oklahoma. Vance was also suspected of injuring two police officers in a shoot out and posting his escape on social media,

During the hunt for Vance, an Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy was shot and wounded near Leedey, Oklahoma, television station KOCO reported on its website. His condition is unknown, although more than one report said his condition was not life-threatening.

Vance stole a police vehicle as he escaped following a gunfight with two police officers. He was shot twice in the shootout while he injured the two officers.

Vance was charged Friday with the murder of Valerie Wilkson, 54, and her husband, Ronald Wilkson, 55. Both were found dead on Sunday in their home about 30 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. The U.S. Marshal Service joined in the search for Vance.

According to the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s office, Vance was believed to have killed his uncle and aunt about three hours following the shootout with police. He then stole their car.

Further, Vance was thought to have a contagious disease that he was probably trying to spread. The office said he was charged with child sexual abuse in July.

In a video posted on Facebook Live while escaping, Vance was heard saying he was close to stealing another car. He also said that the pursuit has been “intense.”

Vance said, “This ain’t a joke. This ain’t a prank,” adding that he was set up.

Vance also mentioned in the video that he was shot. There seem to be lots of blood on his shirt and a shotgun or rifle beside him in the vehicle, the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said.

Ross, Lester Lead Cubs in Game 5 Win

David Ross, Jon Lester and the rest of the Chicago aren’t done just yet.

Ross played the lead role as the Cubs survived another close game in the World Series, outdoing the Indians 3-2 in Game 5 on Sunday. The 39-year-old catcher had a brilliant night behind the plate and provided a clutch sacrifice fly that helped Chicago to its first Series win at Wrigley Field in 71 years.

As he concludes his 15th season, young teammates nicknamed Ross “Grandpa Rossy”. He plans to step down after the season.

“I’ve had a storybook year, honestly,” Ross said. “There are so many things I can talk about that have happened to me over this year. That’s just another cool one to get the sac fly that puts us ahead and we hold on.”

Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder even called him out after devoting “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to Ross during the seventh-inning stint of his final home start. “We love you Rossy,” Vedder said as the crowd roared. “Let’s take this show to Cleveland!”

Ross said excitedly that everybody was looking at him after Eddie Vedder dedicated the whole seventh-inning stretch to him. “I’m like, my mind’s blown, I’m thinking about being out of the game and he’s a quality individual. He’s just a good person, rock star, everybody knows who Eddie Vedder is. He says my name, it’s a huge compliment.”

Ross and his close pal Lester came together to slow Cleveland’s attack after Saturday night’s 7-2 victory by the Indians. Lester pitched six solid innings as he rebounded from a mediocre outing in the Series opener. He improved to 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA in five postseason starts this year.

Ross was 3-0 in three career starts in the Fall Classic prior to losing Game 1 against Cleveland when he was pilfered for three runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Game 5 for Ross involved two exploits in foul territory. He was lucky first baseman Anthony Rizzo was there for a juggling catch when a foul pop got off his glove near the railing of the visitors’ dugout. The catcher also bumped into Rizzo on a foul popup in the fourth and held on for the out.

But Ross did his best work when he settled behind the plate. He put together a solid job of mounting close called third strikes to Brandon Guyer in the fifth and Jason Kipnis in the sixth. Moreover, he cut down Francisco Lindor who tried to steal second for the final out of the inning after Kipnis’ strikeout.

Ross’ defensive work was especially crucial with Lester having his typical struggles with runners on the basepaths.

The Cubs fell behind 1-0 before scoring three times in the fourth. Ross topped the rally with a sac fly to left with the bases loaded, driving in Ben Zobrist.

Ross was substituted for a pinch hitter in the sixth, and he gave a big hug with Lester in the dugout.

lester-ross

“I just said I love him,” Ross said. “Thanks for everything. I love him.”

Ross and Lester often hang out together off the field and have been together for years. Lester settled to a six-year, $155 million deal in December 2014, a major moment in the Cubs’ rebirth. He then followed Lester to Chicago for a two-year, $5 million contract, and quickly turned into a valuable leader in the clubhouse.

“I love him like a brother, like a dad, like a mentor,” Rizzo said. “I was pretty emotional, seeing him in that at-bat driving in that run, throwing that guy out. We were talking before the game, this will be a blast. We got the W. We just need to get two more Ws.”

FBI Acquires Warrant to Examine Huma Abedin Emails

The Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained a search warrant for the private laptop of Hillary Clinton’s aide Huma Abedin. According to the reports of NBC News and ABC News on Sunday, the agency will search Abedin’s emails in relation to their on-going investigation regarding Clinton’s emails.

On Sunday, an official source who has knowledge of the current probe said the FBI and Abedin’s representatives deliberated on getting an approval to search Abedin’s computer. Within Abedin’s computer, agents uncovered new emails which may have links to their previous investigation about Clinton’s email. The search will shed new light on allegations about how Clinton managed classified information when she was still the Secretary of State.

Huma Abedin’s woes started when her disgraced husband, the former New York Representative Anthony Weiner was charged with sexual misconduct involving a 15-year old teenager.

The computer used by Weiner was seized during the time of the investigation.

Federal authorities initiated the review of the said computer which was shared by Abedin and her husband because of the current sexual charges probe. Clinton’s controversial emails emerged when authorities started the investigation about Weiner’s sexual charges.

Massive number of Emails to be processed

The computer contains as much as 650,000 emails according to The Wall Street Journal on Sunday. However, authorities are uncertain of how many emails are related to their current “Clinton email server” investigation.

The FBI Director, James Comey said on Friday that the agency discovered new emails. This new batch may be associated with their inquiry of the private email Clinton used. In July, Comey confirmed that Clinton mistreated classified information on her private email. However, he would not suggest filing any criminal charges against the democratic candidate.

The Democratic supporters, infuriated by Comey’s statement on Friday, questioned the bureau on why they are examining more emails. For them, the bureau provided insufficient details which subsequently lead to a range of conspiracy theories against Clinton.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch pleaded Comey not to disclose the new findings on Clinton’s email. She said it will interfere with the election, which is a violation of the Justice Department’s policy.

Meanwhile, the Republican candidate, Donald Trump was pleased with Comey’s statement concerning  the latest email review. For Trump, America needs to know more of the candidate’s behavior prior to voting.

The FBI has not made any formal communication to either Clinton’s or Abedin’s camp.

Buildings Collapse as Another Powerful Earthquake Hits Italy

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit central Italy on Sunday, collapsing more buildings in small cities and towns previously shuddered by tremors in the past two months. There were no immediate reports of casualties, though.

It was a stronger quake than one that struck central Italy on Aug. 24, killing close to 300 people. Thousands of aftershocks have been recorded in the weeks since then, including two exceptionally powerful tremors last Wednesday.

Italy’s emergency services said there was severe damage in numerous locations in the central regions of Umbria and Marche on Sunday. Three people were rescued from debris in the town of Ussita. However, there were no reports of casualties, State broadcaster RAI said.

The monks said the ancient Basilica of St. Benedict in the walled town of Norcia was ravaged by the quake. Images on television showed a collapsed church in the town center and also another church with one side reduced to rubble.

Several towns and villages previously thrashed by the 6.2 quake in August had seen further substantial damage, local authorities said.

“This morning’s quake has hit the few things that were left standing. We will have to start from scratch,” Arquata del Tronto deputy mayor Michele Franchi told Rai television.

Most of these places were largely deserted when the quake hit on Sunday morning at around 7.40 a.m. (2:40 a.m. ET) as residents were already evacuated following the August tragedy.

The earthquake was felt as far as Bolzano in the north, close to the boundary with Austria and as far as the Puglia region in the south at the bottom end of the Italian peninsula.

In Rome, transport authorities had to close down the metro system for checks as the quake was also felt strongly in the capital.

Italy one of the most earthquake prone in Europe

Italy rests on two fault lines, making it one of the most seismically active nations in Europe.

italy3

The last major earthquake to hit the country before this year hit the central city of L’Aquila in 2009. Casualties reached more than 300 people.

In 1908, an earthquake followed by a tsunami eradicated an estimated 80,000 people in the southern sections of Reggio Calabria and Sicily. This was the most deadly since the start of the 20th century.

For The First Time, Scientists Identify Fossilized Dinosaur Brain Tissue

An unassuming brown pebble has been distinguished by British and Australian scientists as the first known example of fossilized dinosaur brain tissue. The pebble was discovered by a fossil hunter in southern England more than 10 years ago.

dinobrain

The fossilized brain is most probably from a species similar to Iguanodon. This was a large herbivore that existed during the early cretaceous period, around 133 million years ago. It was found near Bexhill in Sussex in 2004 by Jamie Hiscocks, a fossil enthusiast.

A report of the researchers’ study in a Special Publication of the Geological Society of London was released. They said that they think the piece of tissue was so well-preserved since the dinosaur’s brain was “pickled” in an extremely acidic and low oxygen body of water – similar to a swamp or bog – immediately after it perished.

“The chances of preserving brain tissue are incredibly small, so the discovery of this specimen is astonishing,” said Alex Liu of Cambridge University’s department of earth sciences, who worked on its identification.

Cambridge’s David Norman, who led the work, said the discovery also brought up questions about the usual concept of dinosaurs as animals with very small brains.

In normal reptiles, the brain is sausage-shaped and bordered by a dense region of sinuses and blood vessels. This means that the brain itself only occupy about half of the space in the cranial cavity.

However, the scientists said the tissue in the fossilized brain seems to have been pressed against the skull. This raises the likelihood that some dinosaurs had larger brains.

But Norman’s team warned against generating any firm conclusions from this single fossil about dinosaurs’ intelligence levels or brain size.

Dinosaur brains may be larger than previously believed

Norman said that they can’t see the lobes of the brain. Hence, they can’t say for certain how large this dinosaur’s brain was. Though it is very much likely that dinosaurs had larger brains than they were given credit for, they can’t tell from this specimen alone.

Trump Rallies as Clinton’s Lead Now Just 2.5 Percent

On Saturday, the Washington Post/ABC News survey showed that Donald Trump was fast gaining on Hillary Clinton. He has cut her lead to 2.5%, in less than 2 weeks before the November 8 election. The Democratic candidate still leads at 47% backing of likely voters while the Republican flag bearer is at 45%.

the-new-yorker-who-is-donald-trumpMomentum Gained

The new national poll indicated a close two-point margin; a score which appropriately falls within the 3% point margin of error. The new poll has a huge contrast compared to ABC’s national poll from last weekend. The poll shows a remarkable lead of Clinton ranging from 38 to 50 percent.

It was a massive momentum gained by Trump in the past few months of the campaign election coming from a double-digit difference from his opponent.

In spite of the close call in the race, 59 percent of voters assume Clinton will win as the 45th President of the United States. Out of these voters, 90% firmly believed she will win the election.

With that forecast, 2% of Clinton’s likely voters say their expectation is giving them less reason to vote. Meanwhile, the other 2% of voters who believed Trump will win will probably vote for that same reason.

FBI Investigation may shape election

The survey performed earlier this week, before the Federal Bureau of Investigation released news about Clinton’s controversial private email. The FBI is closely examining the Democratic flag bearer’s email server.

Likewise, the investigation may affect the election outcome. Trump might get an advantage on Clinton’s leaked email woes. On one of the emails from Clinton’s aide, Huma Abedin and her husband, the troubled ex-representative of New York, Anthony Weiner of New York contains Trump statements about the probe. The Republican candidate said regarding on the FBI investigation, “This changes everything”.

The Washington Post/ABC News poll was done from October 25 to 27, in 1,779 adult correspondents, with 1,148 likely voters. The survey has a 2.5 point margin of error either way.

Is Afghan hound Tea the world’s most photogenic dog?

Clinton Requests For Facts of New FBI Email Investigation

Hillary Clinton has insisted the FBI clarify without delay why it is implementing a new investigation into her use of emails.

She said that Americans “deserve to get the full and complete facts immediately”.

The FBI says it has new emails about her use of a private server when she was secretary of state.

The new investigation was announced 11 days before the election. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said the move was the “biggest political scandal since Watergate”.

A probe into the separated husband of top Clinton aide, Huma Abedin, led to the discovery of the latest emails.

The FBI earlier launched an investigation into whether former high-flying congressman Anthony Weiner forwarded sexually explicit emails to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina. Consequently, devices belonging to Abedin and Weiner were appropriated.

FBI director James Comey disclosed the discovery of the new emails in a letter to Congress on Friday.

The director said that he did not know yet the implication of the findings. But the FBI would investigate if any of the emails held confidential information.

Democrat presidential candidate Mrs. Clinton said she was assured the investigation into the emails would not alter the FBI’s initial finding in July.

The FBI determined she should not be incriminated for her use of a private email server as secretary of state. Clinton held the position from 2009 to 2013.

She told reporters on the campaign trail in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday: “It’s imperative that the bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay,”

While James Rubin, a senior media adviser to Clinton’s campaign, told the BBC on Saturday that “when all of this is over, this is going to be a gigantic tempest in a teapot”.

He also insinuated that to avoid the FBI from being criticized by the Republicans after the election, they decided to send the letter now.

On the other side, Donald Trump told a crowd of supporters at a rally in Iowa: “It’s everybody’s hope that justice, at last, can be delivered.”

“The FBI would never have reopened this case at this time unless it were a most egregious criminal offense.”

He likened the latest incident to that of the 1970s Watergate scandal that swamped former Republican President Richard Nixon.

The FBI has already determined the Democratic candidate had confidential information on a private email server.

In July, Comey cleared Clinton of any criminal wrongdoing. However, he said Mrs. Clinton’s managing of confidential material during her time as secretary of state was “extremely careless”.

The disclosure that she held sensitive material while violating federal rules by operating her own email server out of her upstate New York home has stalked her campaign since last year.

John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman, condemned the FBI’s “exceptional” timing.

Paul Ryan, the House of Representatives Speaker, described the FBI pronouncement “long overdue”.

The highest-ranked elected Republican repeated his call for the Director of National Intelligence. He asked him again to stop classified updates for the Democratic candidate.

“She was entrusted with some of our nation’s most important secrets, and she betrayed that trust by carelessly mishandling highly classified information,” he said.

She said sorry

The New York Times first disclosed the then-secretary of state’s private email server in March 2015.

She did not immediately convey regret. She stated that “convenience” was the main reason for her “hdr22@clintonemail.com” address.

Shortly after that, she apologized in an interview with ABC News. She has since said sorry to voters several times.

Duterte Says God Got Him To Stop Swearing

God spoke to Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on a flight from Japan on Thursday. The president said he has promised to stop swearing after God warned him that the plane would crash if he kept using foul language.

The former mayor is known for profanity that has included flare-ups targeted at U.S. President Barack Obama and Pope Francis. He said he heard a voice and recognized it was God, telling him to clean up his act.

Duterte appeared at a news conference on Thursday upon arrival in his home city of Davao. He said he was looking at the skies while he was on the flight home. Everybody was asleep but a voice said that, “you know, if you don’t stop epithets, I will bring this plane down now”.

“And I said, ‘who is this?’ So, of course, it’s God. OK.

“So, I promise God … not to express slang, cuss words and everything.”

Duterte appeared as an aggressive, insensitive, alternative candidate in a May election which he won by a big margin. He owed much of his success to his unsophisticated style and promises to attack problems vital to ordinary people, like crime and drugs.

Once he took office, he was advised to act more presidential. However, it was an advice not heeded for long. Duterte continued his eruptions of profanity with passion when he began hearing foreign criticism of his deadly war on drugs.

drug war

He has called U.S. President Barack Obama a “son of a bitch”. He also used the same words in disparaging the pope.

He called U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon a “devil”, he told Obama to “go to hell”, and said “fuck you” twice to the European Union, while raising his middle finger.

Duterte also used the same language in Tokyo on Tuesday when talking about his annoyance with foreign criticism of his drug war.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said that Duterte is certainly entitled to his opinions about his own relationship with a supreme being.” However, he declined to say whether Duterte’s promise might make it easier to deal with him.

Duterte’s foreign affairs adviser Alan Peter Cayetano said that the president was tired and seemed preoccupied during the flight back from Japan.

Cayetano told reporters on Friday that Duterte felt it was a message from God.

He said that he always felt that Duterte is a deeply spiritual person. He’s not religious, but he believes in God, he added.

The Philippines is largely Roman Catholic.

Singer Gets Apology From Sixers For National Anthem Booting Incident

The Philadelphia 76ers apologized to a recording artist on Friday for a rushed decision to deny her from singing the US national anthem at their season opener this week. The team barred the singer from singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the last-minute because she was in a “We Matter” jersey.

Sevyn Streeter said the team told her that she could not take the court because of her shirt. She was informed only moments before she was slated to sing the national anthem. A 76ers’ dance team member went on to sing the anthem.

“We are sorry that this happened. After receiving feedback from our players, basketball operations staff and ownership group, we believe that the wrong decision was made, and Sevyn should have been welcomed to sing,” the Sixers said in a statement.

“We apologize to her, and in an effort to move the conversation forward, we have reached out to offer her an opportunity to return and perform at a game of her choice. We are waiting to hear back.”

The Sixers originally refused to say why Streeter did not perform on Wednesday. They only said that the team supports consequential actions to drive social change.

The team said in a separate statement that they use their games to bring people together, to strengthen communities and to build trust. Further, they will continue to leverage their platform to positively affect the community. They also said they will move from symbolic gestures to action.

Preceding this incident, a woman sang the national anthem while kneeling at center court. She wore a “Black Lives Matter” shirt beneath an opened shirt. This happened last week at the opening of a preseason game between the Sixers and host Miami Heat.

Protests during the national anthem have been a burning matter in recent months. This type of protest started when National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided to not stand for its playing.

Kaepernick has mentioned police brutality and racial injustice among the motives for his protest. Several athletes from varying sports have since followed his lead in different ways, including linking arms during the anthem.

Elvis Presley Breaks Record; Overwhelms Madonna in Album Charts

The late King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley holds a new music title for having the “Most Number One albums by a solo artist”; ranking next to the Beatles, which currently holds 15 Number One albums in their belt.

elvis2

The “Wonder of You” made it as his 13th album to the top of the chart, breaking Lady Gaga’s and Michael Buble’s song records. Until recently, Elvis and Madonna tied the spot for having 12 number one albums respectively.

Elvis would be “so thankful”

The Official Charts Company presented the award to Elvis’s widow, Priscilla Elvis who said that the late singer would be “so thankful” for the accomplishment.

She also said that she is “proud of all he has accomplished and so grateful to the UK fans who have kept his legacy alive with all of their support”. Priscilla also wishes that the fans would continue listening to her husband’s music and “love his music as much as I do.”

The Rock and Roll King died in 1977, his vocal performances in his newest album are accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Songs that shattered records

Similarly, other artists also made it to the top records for their song albums.

Status Quo’s Aquostic II, “That’s A Fact” secured a spot at number seven. Whereas, Sia’s new deluxe edition of “This is Acting”, raised to the spot of number eight from previously being on top 35.

It was followed by “The Serenity Of Suffering’, Korn’s 12th album released, granting the band their first UK Top 10 album since 2002. The top 10 goes to the cast recording of David Bowie’s musical Lazarus.

Meanwhile, new records ended in top 25 this year; Starting with Jimmy Eat World’s “Integrity Blues” which is at number 21. Trailing behind at number 23 is from The Pretty Reckless, “Who You Selling For”. Also, Melanie C’s Version of “Me” got the spot of number 25.

The highest new record goes to Clean Bandit’s “Rockabye” featuring Sean Paul and Anne-Marie.

Similarly, the top five chart singles remain undaunted for the week. Still clinging to the number one spot is Little Mix’s “Shout Out to My Ex”. Drake ends the record in his “Fake Love” which is at number 37, his 20th time staying on top 40.

Venezuela Government Threats Cause Erratic Protest Participaton

Despite strong opposition to Venezuela’s incumbent President Nicolas Maduro, the strike on Friday was subtle than usual. The Venezuelan government gave an ultimatum to close down businesses who will participate in the protest.

12-hour ‘shutdown’

The Democratic Unity Coalition, Venezuela’s government opposition called for a 12-hour shutdown. A political tactic to pressure the administration to pursue the recall referendum to veto their most hated socialist leader.

To ensure businesses will stay open, the government assigned intelligence agents to inspect businesses. They also dispatched the agents outside Polar, the country’s major food and beer private company to make sure it will operate normally.

However, business owners, facing threats if they backed up the strike, allowed their employees to freely decide whether to come in for work or not.

The second-in-command of the presiding Socialist Party, Diosdado Cabello said, that they are after big companies, who will echo “a coup d’etat like in 2002”. Cabello released his statement pertaining to the short-lived coup of the former President Hugo Chavez in 2002.

People support the strike but…

In San Cristobal, the western city of Venezuela serves as one of the focal points where hostility against President Maduro is the strongest. An insurance agent, Adolfo Diaz, aged 38, who works in the city, summarized Venezuelan’s sentiment in saying; “The strike is a good pressure tactic, but if I don’t work, I don’t eat”. He said while trying to get to work despite the scarcity of buses available for commuters.

Furthermore, the transport system in San Cristobal was deeply affected by the previous demonstration. According to witnesses, protesters and police collided in a violent encounter. Also, the government fined two businesses that decided to remain closed during the protest on Friday.

Meanwhile, in Caracas, Venezuela’s main capital, traffic was lighter compared to the Wednesday’s protest. Tens of thousands anti-Maduro protesters attended the previous protests where they rallied in the main highway of Caracas. But Friday’s protest was ‘patchy’, streets were almost empty for a weekday since most students choose to stay at home.

Correspondingly, stores of commodities like bakeries and pharmacies were open. Consumers lined up to buy basic goods such as bread and flour, of which the country lacks sufficient supplies since the start of the economic crisis.

One unemployed resident, who was standing in a bakery line in Eastern Caracas, Eduardo Martinez aged 51, stated that he supports the opposition but does not want to participate in the shutdown.

Practical reasons

Most of the businesses that stayed open opt to choose the practical decision.

This is true in the situation of Alfonso Brito, aged 54 and a Café Owner. For the businessman, he could not afford to lose another day’s profits from his café. According to the shop owner, only a handful of people were able to buy from his shop. He also added that he already lost so much during the Wednesday’s protest, to close his shop again.

Businesses are democratic

In Venezuela’s second largest city, Maracaibo, streets were practically empty. Leydy Nava, an associate in a real estate company said, “We have to support the Democratic Unity … in my company we obeyed the strike”.

venez2

Carlos Larrazabal, the Vice-President of Venezuela’s largest umbrella company group, Fedecamaras, said in a Reuter’s interview that their companies remained open. They allowed their employees to decide whether they will come to work, displaying the democratic essence of their company. However, tension can be seen outside the company where government stationed troops to inspect and observe.

Opposition leaders are planning another protest next week in the Miraflores presidential palace. They pledged to carry out a political trial for Maduro in the National Assembly.

If Maduro lost to the recall referendum, it will prompt another presidential election, threatening to end the 17 years of socialist rule.

Starvation in an oil-rich country

Venezuela’s boasts of the largest oil reserves worldwide. Nonetheless, it is suffering three years of recession. Residents endure skipping meals as inflation rates are at its highest.

President Maduro, aged 53, defends himself by blaming the US-led “economic war” and the decreasing value of oil prices globally.

Opposition leaders accused the OPEC nation’s president of staging a “coup”, controlling the government institutions and arresting people who are planning to push the referendum.

On the other hand, Maduro said that his opponents are trying to illegally remove him from power.

The Wednesday demonstration showed Venezuela’s unified effort to oust the incumbent president. Local authorities confirmed a total of 97 protesters arrested, 82 people injured including 26 policemen. Also, seven policemen are facing human rights violation.

Miguel Acevedo, a tax official, said that “The only thing the opposition wants is to ruin the country”. He interpreted the erratic display of support on Friday’s demonstration as “the country said no to the opposition.”

Report Says Seventy-five Percent of Internet Usage in 2017 Will Be Mobile

According to media buying agency Zenith forecast this week, seventy-five percent of internet usage in 2017 will be mobile. The number is up slightly from this year. This is due to an increasing number of consumers around the world that access the web on tablets and smartphones.

Zenith earlier projected that 71 percent of internet consumption would be mobile in 2016. It released its “Mobile Advertising Forecasts” report on Thursday. The report said 60 percent of global internet advertising money in 2018 will come from mobile advertising.

volvo

In 2018, mobile advertising spending will total $134 billion. This “is more than what will be spent on magazine, newspaper, outdoor and cinema advertising put together,” it said.

Zenith is a unit of French ad agency Publicis Groupe SA. The media agency had projected global mobile advertising expenditure to be $71 billion in 2016.

Brands are rushing to Facebook, Google and Snapchat where they can market to viewers. This is because more ad money shifts to the digital realm from television.

“In four years, you’ve gone from 40 percent to 70 percent (of total internet usage) in mobile,” said Scott Singer, a digital media executive and managing director of innovation consultancy firm DDG Inc.

Major shift of advertising to mobile

This trend is leading a shift in ad spending to mobile and fueling deals in the media, communications and entertainment businesses, he added.

The escalation of mobile data consumption, including video, is forcing telecommunications companies to merge content and digital distribution. They are waging that they can entice viewers to online video and other content that are transmitted over their internet and wireless networks. Furthermore, they can draw advertisers to grow ad revenue.

AT&T Inc said on Saturday it intends to buy media company Time Warner Inc for $85.4 billion to expand into content distribution. Verizon Communications Inc has offered to acquire internet company Yahoo Inc.

Both companies plan to leverage user data to assist marketers in delivering targeted ads.

Russia Out of UN Human Rights Council

On Friday, the General Assembly voted Russia off the U.N. Human Rights Council. It was a stunning reproach to the country that is increasingly being blamed of war crimes over its actions in Syria.

The Human Rights Council is the UN’s foremost body charged with protecting and promoting human rights. The 193-member General Assembly voted 14 members to the 47-nation council.

Russia received 112 votes. Hence, the country lost its regional seat to Hungary, which had 144 votes, and Croatia, which received 114 votes.

Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin made light of the significance of the loss.

“It was a very close vote and very good countries competing, Croatia, Hungary. They are fortunate because of their size, they are not exposed to the winds of international diplomacy. Russia is very exposed. We’ve been on council a number of years, I’m sure next time we’ll get in,” he said.

The U.S, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, China, Japan, Brazil, Rwanda, Hungary, Cuba, South Africa, Tunisia,. and U.K. also won seats on the council. Beside Russia, Guatemala was the only country contending for a seat to not be elected.

Strong opposition against Saudi Arabia and Russia

Human rights groups had cried out for countries to refuse the candidacies of Saudi Arabia and Russia. Saudi Arabia has been faulted of arbitrary attacks against civilians in Yemen. But Saudi Arabia’s election was an inevitable conclusion since it was running unchallenged for its regional seat.

U.N. director at Human Rights Watch Louis Charbonneau said that in rebuffing Russia’s bid for re-election to the Human Rights Council, U.N. member nations have sent a strong message to the Kremlin concerning its support for a regime that has committed so much atrocity in Syria.

Baroness Anelay, Britain’s Human Rights Minister, said she was pleased with her country’s re-election to the council.

Anelay said in a statement that the UK has been a keen advocate of the crucial work of the Council since its inception and that her country is honored to continue to serve as a member.

Boy Wakes Up From Coma Speaking A Language He Was Never Fluent In

For Reuben Nsemoh, life’s been full of ambiguities lately.

Following a concussion he suffered in a soccer game, the suburban Atlanta teen was troubled about his difficulty in concentrating. He was worried over whether he’ll ever get to play his favorite sport.

But the million dollar question is: how is it that he’s suddenly speaking fluent Spanish?

Another player accidentally kicked the 16-year old in the head during a game that put him in a coma.

When Nsemoh woke up, he did something he’d never done before: speak Spanish like a native.

Although he could already speak some Spanish, his parents said that he was never fluent in the language until his concussion.

But he’s starting to lose his fluency in Spanish as his English is coming back slowly.

Brain injuries can change a person’s speech pattern and give them a different accent. This extremely rare condition is called foreign accent syndrome. The first known case was documented in 1941. It involved a Norwegian woman who began speaking with a German accent after she suffered injuries to the brain during a German bombing run.

Since then there have been a few dozen reported cases.

In Australia, a former bus driver got in a car accident that left her with a broken jaw and back. When she regained consciousness, she was left with something absolutely surprising: a French accent.

Three years ago, police found a Navy veteran passed out in a Southern California motel. He had no memory of his previous life when he woke up and spoke only Swedish.

And early this year, a Texas woman has been speaking with a British accent ever since a jaw surgery.

Dr. Karen Croot, one of the few specialists in foreign accent syndrome, said a few years ago that the condition is an impairment of motor control. “Speech is one of the most complicated things we do, and there are a lot of brain centers involved in coordinating a lot of moving parts. If one or more of them are damaged, that can affect the timing, melody and tension of their speech,” she added.

Passengers Evacuated as American Airlines Jet Catches Fire at Chicago Airport

An American Airlines jet had to abort take off and evacuate passengers through its emergency chutes on Friday. The plane caught fire moments prior to takeoff from O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, authorities said.

No serious injuries were reported.

The airline said in a statement that an “engine-related issue” prevented the takeoff of American Airlines Flight 383. The Boeing 767 was bound for Miami with 161 passengers and a crew of nine.

The flight crew reported that a tire had blown-out while the plane was rolling down the runway before takeoff was canceled, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The FAA or the airline did not mention a fire.

jetfire

However, footage from WLS-TV, Chicago’s ABC News affiliate station, showed an American Airlines jet on the ground with flames and large clouds of black smoke rising from one side of the aircraft. Emergency slides had been deployed and passengers gathered about the aircraft. They watched the blaze as fire trucks sprayed water on the flames.

Passenger Hector Gustavo Cardenas posted a video clip on Facebook showing passengers yelling at each other to move faster as they head down the aisle to the emergency exit slide.

The Chicago Department of Aviation confirmed in a statement that the city fire department acted in response to an aircraft fire concerning American Airlines Flight 383. They also verified that the passengers were evacuated from the plane. Moreover, it said that there was no crash involved in the incident.

A flight attendant and seven passengers were taken to a hospital for evaluation of minor injuries, the company said.

According to an American Airlines spokeswoman, the injuries were typical of those related with evacuating a commercial jet. None of them involved burns or smoke inhalation.

Incident causes major disruption of airport operations

The incident required the closing of at least three of the airport’s eight runways, the city Aviation Department said.

About two hours following the incident, the airport had experienced 170 delays of inbound flights and 130 departing flights. This was reported by the flight-tracking website FlightAware.com

Based on web tracking sites and a live feed of tower conversations from liveatc.net, operations later resumed on the north side of O’Hare airport, one of the world’s busiest.

Huge blow for Clinton as FBI dramatically reopens ‘secret server’ email probe

Hillary Clinton was dealt a potentially devastating blow to her presidential campaign today when the FBI dramatically re-opened their ‘secret server’ email probe.

With just 11 days to go before America votes for its next president, the news could hardly have come at a worse time.

The Clinton campaign said the decision to revisit the case so close to the election was “extraordinary,” and urged the FBI to provide more details.

This shock development has come after devices belonging to Clinton’s chief aide Huma Abedin and her estranged husband Anthony Weiner were seized.

FBI

The devices in question formed part of an FBI investigation into sex texts that Weiner allegedly sent to a 15-year-old girl.

FBI director James Comey told Congress that new emails “that appear to be pertinent to the [Clinton] investigation” have been discovered.

He said that an investigative team is seeking to determine whether classified information was contained in the emails and whether any of them were ‘significant’.

FBI Director letter to congress clinton email probe

Clinton was apparently totally unaware of this breaking news story as she traveled by air to a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this morning.

The plane she was traveling in had no Internet coverage and she remained silent when reporters, waiting on the tarmac as her plane landed, shouted questions about the re-opened email investigation.

She simply smiled and waved to reporters as she disembarked from the aircraft and got into her Secret Service SUV.

Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine, campaigning in Tallahassee, Tennessee, today would only say when asked to comment: “I’ve got to read a little more.”

“Bigger than Watergate” – Trump

President Obama also ignored reporters’ questions about the story as he left the White House to board Marine Force One today.

Republican rival Donald Trump was quick to seize on the news saying it was “bigger than Watergate.”

As he spoke in Manchester, New Hampshire, supporters would be heard chanting “lock her up!”

Trump told the rally: “The FBI has just sent a letter to Congress informing them that they have discovered new emails pertaining to the former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s investigation

Criminal

“And they are reopening the case into her criminal and illegal conduct that threatens the security of the United States of America.

“Hillary Clinton’s corruption is on a scale we have never seen before. We must not let her take her criminal scheme into the Oval Office. This is bigger than Watergate.”

FBI chief Comey sent the letter to a number of people including  the heads of the of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, Judiciary Committees, the House’s Oversight Committee and the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee.

He wrote: “In connection with an unrelated case the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation.

Classified

“[T]he FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to access their importance to our investigation.”

In Bensalem, Pennsylvania, Trump’s running mate Mike Pence was cheered as he told a rally: ‘We commend the FBI for having the courage to re-open this case because no-one is above the law.’

Pence later tweeted: ‘We call on the FBI to immediately release all emails pertinent to their investigation. Americans have the right to know before Election Day.’

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Clinton had “nobody but herself to blame” and added: “She was entrusted with some of our nation’s most important secrets, and she betrayed that trust by carelessly mishandling highly classified information.

Reckless

“This decision, long overdue, is the result of her reckless use of a private email server, and her refusal to be forthcoming with federal investigators.

“I renew my call for the Director of National Intelligence to suspend all classified briefings for Secretary Clinton until this matter is fully resolved.”

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy accused Clinton of a “fundamental lack of judgment and disregard for protecting and handling our nation’s highly classified secrets.”

President Duterte Displays What Trump Foreign Policy Might Look Like

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been dubbed as the Donald Trump of Asia, as both politicians irked traditional allies and move closer to rivals.

Republican candidate Donald Trump has brought fear to some Americans as he showed his plans to build a wall between Mexico and United States, restricting immigrants entering the United States, and to force its allies to pay for American defense assistance.

World leaders slammed President Duterte because of his war against illegal drugs that caused the deaths of more than 3,600 suspected addicts and dealers. Further, he is revising the country’s foreign policies.

The two politicians may be different in so many ways, but have similarities in authoritarian leadership style. Duterte is a three-decade politician serving as mayor, prosecutor, congressman; while Trump is a billionaire who never held public office.

Duterte’s actions in the past few months showed the Americans an insight on what Trump presidency might look like.

Bridget Welsh, an international relations expert at National Taiwan University said, “Trump and Duterte are similar in their vulgarity, misogyny and in-your-face politics”. She added, “they also capitalize on similar sentiment—shake the system up, challenge the status quo and basically move beyond the norms of rule of law.”

trumpduterte051716Duterte also showed more favor to Chinese’s President Xi Jinping, convinced that the country’s future depends on Beijing. He stated, “only China can help us.” Trump on the other hand aggressively challenged the Asian superpower, which he considers a threat to U.S. economy’s growth.

But the two leaders show common characteristics in their willingness to reform the relationships with longstanding allies.

The United States is a long-time ally of the Philippines and viewed by most Filipinos as a friend. Yet, Duterte has been denouncing the American government, even calling Barack Obama “son of a whore.”

Trump denounced Angela Merkel for “ruining Germany” about her stand on refugees. He also suggested that he would support NATO allies only if they pay the United States for military assistance.

Both leaders have a tendency to react sharply to criticism. Duterte even threatened to withdraw its alliance with U.S. and U.N. after they chastised him over his drug war. And Trump, as Hillary Clinton emphasized in the three presidential debates, has a famously thin skin.

Both Trump and Duterte displays the same characteristics on foreign policy.

American officials criticized Duterte’s recent move to split with the U.S. in favor of China.   Even his own mentor former President Fidel Ramos had things to say about it.

“Are we throwing away decades of military partnership, tactical proficiency, compatible weaponry, predictable logistics and soldier-to-soldier camaraderie, just like that?” asked Ramos in a recent editorial.

While Trump shows a strong stance over foreign policy, he proposed establishing safe zones in Syria. He also suggested meeting Russian “provocative” moves with military forces if necessary. “He and I haven’t spoken, and he and I disagree,” Trump said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the second presidential debate.

“I expect there would be mass resignations from the State Department, from government if there’s a Trump presidency”. Welsh added, “He doesn’t have a foreign policy and he doesn’t have a foreign policy community with him. I think America would face a very significant crisis.”

Last, the biggest similarity between Trump and Duterte is their shoot-from-the-hip communication style. Both seems to say whatever comes to mind, and have a tendency to contradict their statements in the next.

Duterte’s recent contradicting statement leaves China, Japan, even the U.S. confused about where exactly he stands. If this happens to the President of the United States, every word he says would have a global significance especially on military and foreign affairs.

Uncertainty has its costs.

Newsline: FBI Director James Comey sent eight congressional committee chairmen a letter 11 days before the election.

“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear pertinent to the investigation,” Director Comey write the congressmen. “I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.”

Woman’s Vehicle Returned With Note And Gas Money After It Was Accidentally Stolen

Erin Hatzi’s husband came home on Tuesday and assumed she was out when he didn’t see her car in the garage or on the driveway.

He was surprised when he found her inside so he asked where she had parked.

Confused by his question, she said that she parked in the driveway.

“Nope!” he replied.

It was 9:30 p.m. and her red 2001 Subaru Impreza was missing. Panic started to set in.

The Portland, Oregon, couple anxiously examined security footage from a camera positioned outside of their garage. Sure enough, they saw a woman get into the car at around 7 p.m, back out of the driveway and took off.

So, they immediately called the police.

Hatzi told CBS News that they were pretty angry and flabbergasted that the car was taken directly from their driveway.

However, the car reappeared less than 24 hours later.

And it turns out, the whole thing seems to have been a huge mix-up.

They were able to make out the whole story after police barred a woman who drove up to the house in the missing car. Hatzi’s husband happened to head out the front door as police were making their stop.

Hatzi said that he told them that the car belonged to his wife and that it was taken from the driveway they were standing in front of.

As he inspected the car, he found a note and some cash inserted underneath the windshield wipers.

The woman wrote her name and phone number in it, and clarified:

“Hello, So sorry I stole your car. I sent my friend with my key to pick up my red subaru at 7802 SE Woodstock and she came back with your car. I did not see the car until this morning and I said, ‘that is not my car.’ There is some cash for gas and I more than apologize for the shock and upset this must have caused you. … So so sorry for this mistake.”

Initially, Hatzi thought this couldn’t possibly be true. However, following the police’s investigation, they confirmed that the woman’s story checked out.

An officer explained that the keys can be interchangeable in some older model Subarus. This explains how someone erroneously drove off with the wrong vehicle.

Hatzi said that she was very thankful and then it was mainly disbelief and amusement that something like this could happen,”.

Subaru of America has not immediately returned any request for comment on this matter.

Mayor Killed in Shootout As Philippine War On Drugs Enters New Phase

As a new phase of a violent narcotics clampdown set its sights on high profile individuals, a mayor was killed along with nine of his body guards in a shootout on Friday (Local time). The mayor was on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s wanted list for suspected drugs links.

The 10 men opened fire on officers who attempted to halt their two vehicles at a checkpoint in Mindanao before dawn. The men died of their wounds on the way to the hospital, police said.

Bernard Tayong of the North Cotabato police office said that the police operation was legitimate. No officers were hurt but a police vehicle was riddled with bullets, he added.

Tayong told reporters that they have information that the mayor and his men were carrying drugs. They tried to intercept them but the mayor and his men chose to shoot it out.

The incident happened far from Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom’s generally Muslim town of Datu Saudi Ampatuan.

It came as police modify tactics in the controversial war on drugs. Their sights are now trained at government officials, politicians, high-ranking army and police officials. Moreover, there are celebrities suspected of involvement in the trade.

Dubbed “Project Double Barrel Alpha”, the new plan seeks to reduce the bloodshed and increase arrests in a campaign that has claimed more than 2,300 lives since Duterte took office on June 30.

c1_1121460_620x413Duterte won the presidency on the assurances of killing criminals and ran under the logo of a clenched fist.

In a news conference late on Thursday following his return from a visit to Japan, Duterte waved a thick book he claimed had names of officials suspected of drug links. The book contains about 3,000 names.

More than 1,600 of those killed in the anti-drugs campaign died during police operations. It is a death toll that has gained international concern about extrajudicial killings.

Duterte has repeatedly torn into his critics as he aggressively defended the campaign.

In a recent poll, 94 percent of respondents said it was important that police take suspects alive. This shows the public’s unease over the crackdown.

After Friday’s shootout, seven guns, which include an Armalite rifle, and 13 small packs of suspected methamphetamines were retrieved from the mayor’s car, police investigators said

Dimaukom’s wife, who is also the town’s vice mayor, is also on Duterte’s watch list.

Shifting targets

National police spokesman Dionardo Carlos said on Thursday that the war on drugs had been magnified to go beyond poorer areas where low-level peddlers operate.

New targets were transport networks, wealthier neighborhoods, show business circles and nightclubs. The authorities aim to get rid of drugs like ecstasy and cocaine in these places.

Carlos denied there was an intentional endorsing of extrajudicial killings. He said casualties occurred when suspects refused to surrender. Police were keen to avoid violence, which is the reason why they are shifting to Alpha, he added.

Since late June, about 30,000 suspects were arrested and 750,000 drug users had surrendered. Of the “high value” targets, 201 had given up, 66 were arrested and 14 were killed.

He said 150,000 police had been tested for drug use. 164 of which returned positive results and would be dismissed.

Trump Tags Clinton as “Corrupt”; Michelle Obama Backs Her Up

As the 2016 US election comes to a close, Republican Nominee Donald Trump condemned both Hillary and Bill Clinton as corrupt politicians that would use the presidential position to enrich themselves at the expense of hard working Americans.

Mrs. Clinton with the help of the first lady Michelle Obama rallied voters in North Carolina, a state that could deliver a landslide win to the Democrat team.

As new controversies arise every day, Mr. Trump seized newly made-public emails between Bill Clinton and aide Doug Band. The emails were among the thousands of hacked emails from top Clinton aide’s private account.

At a rally in Springfield, Ohio, Mr. Trump said, “Mr. Band called the arrangement ‘unorthodox.’ The rest of us call it outright corrupt,” he added, “If the Clintons were willing to play this fast and loose with their enterprise when they weren’t in the White House, just imagine what they’ll do in the Oval Office.”

Mrs. Clinton did not comment nor mention anything about the hacked emails as she campaigned alongside Mrs. Obama. The first lady, one of Clinton’s most powerful allies branded Trump as too divisive and thin-skinned for the White House.

hug

“We want someone who is a unifying force in this country, someone who sees our differences not as a threat but as a blessing,” the first lady said as she addressed 11,000 enthusiastic supporters.

Mrs. Obama also accused Trump of manipulating voter’s turnout on Nov. 8 by his statement that the general election might be rigged.

“Just for the record, in this country, the United States of America, the voters decide elections,” the first lady said. “They’ve always decided.”

A Recent poll shows Clinton with a huge lead for weeks. However, her campaign team is concerned that her advantage could prompt some of her supporters to stay home on November 8. They might also cast votes for a third-party candidate.

As the candidates enter the final stage of the election campaign, Clinton showed more cash advantage over Trump. Almost $153 million campaign funds have been raised to back Clinton’s presidential run, more than double on what Trump’s side had available.

Recently a GOP house member released a TV ad, saying Trump has “disqualified himself” to be president. Rep. Robert Dold of Illinois calls Trump as an “independent voice,” first time for the committee to discredit a Republican Presidential nominee.

Issues about hacked emails and “Obamacare” premium hike have appeared. These provide Trump potent weapons in the campaign’s final stretch.

Mr. Trump described the premium hike “making it impossible for parents to pay their bills and support their families.”

While campaigning in Ohio, the Republican nominee criticized Clinton for being too tough on Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was another surprisingly favorable comment for the Russian leader.

“She speaks very badly of Putin, and I don’t think that’s smart,” he said.

Frustration grew as his own Republican party criticized him for failing to denounce Putin. He also refused to answer questions regarding the hacked emails’ source, although intelligence agencies have pinned the blame on Moscow.

Last Thursday, Trump said in a statement that Captain Humayun Khan, a Muslim-American soldier killed in Iraq, would be alive if he had been president during the war.

Khan’s family has been backing Clinton and has harshly condemned Trump’s call for temporarily banning Muslims entering the United States.

“I don’t understand how anyone would want to rub salt in the wounds of a grieving family,” the fist lady said.

The day ended with the plane of Mike Pence, Trump’s running mate, sliding off the slippery runway at New York’s La Guardia Airport. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

Yemen Insurgents Launch Missile Toward Mecca – Saudi Arabia

In the midst of Yemen’s stalemate civil war, Shiite rebels in the country launched a ballistic missile in the direction of the holy Muslim city of Mecca overnight, Saudi Arabia said on Friday. It was the rebel’s deepest attack yet into the kingdom.

Mecca is home to the cube-shaped Kaaba that the world’s Muslims pray toward five times a day. According to Rebel media in Yemen, the missile targeted an international airport in Jeddah. However, Saudi Arabia countered that the projectile was intercepted and destroyed 65 kilometers (40 miles) from Mecca.

The missile attack drew the immediate rage of Saudi citizens. For them, the security of Mecca is a fundamental pillar of the Saudi royal family’s stature and the country’s national identity. Further, the missile strike shows the capability of Yemen’s Shiite rebels, or Houthis, and their allies to persist in attacking Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi military said the missile caused no damage. It was fired Thursday night from Yemen’s northwestern Saada province neighboring the kingdom. The Saudi military has a stock of U.S.-made surface-to-air Patriot missile batteries it previously has fired at Houthi-launched missiles.

The military said in a statement transmitted by the state-run Saudi Press Agency that it immediately sent airstrikes that targeted the area where the missile was fired.

The Houthis are backed by forces loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. They have a supply of Soviet-era Scud missiles and locally designed variants.

‘Direct hit’ on airport

A published bulletin was circulated by the Houthi-controlled satellite news channel Al-Masirah. It said its forces had launched a Volcano-1 variant missile at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, without citing Mecca. That airport is located 75 kilometers (45 miles) northwest of Mecca.

The Houthi-controlled SABA news agency stated that the missile “directly hit” the airport and produced substantial destruction. But there were no immediate diversions or delays involving the airport Friday.

Earlier this month, a Houthi ballistic missile targeted Taif. This is where Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd Air Base is located, which also is close to Mecca.

Yemen is on the southern periphery of the Arabian Peninsula. It has been in the midst of a civil war since September 2014 when the Iranian-backed Houthis seized the capital of Sanaa. The then deposed the country’s internationally recognized government.

A Saudi-led alliance of Arab countries began a military campaign against the Houthi forces in March 2015. They claim that part of their mission is to counterbalance Iran’s influence after its nuclear agreement with world powers.

U.S. backs down amidst mounting civilian casualties

At the outset, the Saudi-led campaign had the intelligence and logistical backing of the U.S. However, escalating civilian fatalities from its airstrikes forced America to back off. Earlier this month some 140 people died and over 600 were wounded in a Saudi attack on a funeral in Sanaa.

The U.S. also launched Tomahawk missiles at mobile Houthi radar sites. The US’ response was executed following reports that its warships came under fire in the Red Sea near the crucial Bab al-Mandeb strait.
