Race for the ‘Three-person Baby’ Faces a Dangerous Path

Scientists and ethicists expressed their concern over a risky experiment in making newborns out of three-person DNA’s composition. They claim the medical procedure is deceiving expectant parents from the dangerous future outcome.

Developing the Three-Person Baby

The United Kingdom spearheaded the procedure of an advanced form of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) at the Newcastle University. The ‘three-person baby’ medical procedure aims to prevent mortality caused by defective mitochondria. The researchers completed the final stages of safety checks for clinical testing in June.

Correspondingly, UK is the first country to initiate laws which allow the conception of babies from three different people. Although its primary purpose is to prevent illness, Ukraine uses the medical procedure as the unproven fertility treatment. However, the first successful medical procedure for the three-person baby was born in Mexico. Both countries observed lenient policy over fertility treatment than the UK.

However, the first successful medical procedure for the three-person baby was born in Mexico. Both countries observed lenient policy over fertility treatment than the UK.

Mitochondria defect illness caused fatalities in children; the three-person IVF procedure eliminates the chance of having the disease. Mitochondria generates chemical energy which converts usable energy for the body, it can only pass on thru in the mother’s egg.
The three-person IVF extracts DNA from biological parents and inserts it in the donor’s egg. The subsequent offspring has 0.1% DNA from the donor.

Race to the bottom

The fertility treatment used in Mexico sparked intense criticisms worldwide. Dr. Marcy Darnovsky from the US Centre for Genetics and Society said, “We appear to be in a race to the bottom. They are ignoring ongoing policy debates and conducting dangerous and socially fraught experiments on mothers and children. And they appear to be actively seeking a media splash on the way down.”

She added on the use of the procedure for infertility treatment, “Use of these biologically extreme procedures for infertility is based purely on speculation.”

Insufficient, old mitochondria or chemical imbalance influences embryo development. Scientists argue that the three-person medical procedure can overcome these infertility factors that caused “poor” environment inside the egg.

Uncontrollable

According to Dr. Dusko Ilic, a medical practitioner from King’s College London said: “there was no way to stop IVF clinics offering the procedure”.

The UK was the first country to create laws and regulations for the three-person IVF. Nevertheless, other countries offer “little to no regulation” policy.

Dr. Ilic also added, “IVF clinics are jumping on the bandwagon and rushing ahead, whereas the Newcastle team did all the hard due diligence work.”

The doctor is very much concerned for the safety of the patients. He said, “The major worry is how technically skillful these clinics are, what quality control measures are in place and what information they provide to desperate patients seeking help”.

pregnant-bellyNo confidentiality clause in overseas facilities

He cited the ‘Mexico birth’ wherein the details of the parents and a picture of the newborn baby were made public without any consent. Such disclosure is considered a criminal offense under the UK laws for the three-person baby policy.

“One example of the way UK regulation protects patients is through the confidentiality which attaches to their identity, the details of their treatment, and their children”, said James Lawford Davies, an associate at the Hempsons law firm.

When the UK developed the procedure on the three-person baby, they aimed to prevent inherited mitochondrial illness. The procedure does not entail treatment for infertility.

A professor from the Francis Crick Institute, Prof. Robin Lovell-Badge said, “There was little evidence at the time the law was being changed that the methods were likely to help infertility”.

The application of this medical procedure should only be for mitochondrial disease treatment. Using it as an un-tested form of conception could be dangerous.

The UK’s medical reputation is perceived to be respectable in considering “deeply into the issues of science and safety”. It would be possible to use the three-person baby procedure for infertility in the future if tested to be safe.

three-person-baby-genesProf Lovell-Badge said, “We can’t control this in countries where there are few or no regulations and poor oversight. Unfortunately, the clinics in such countries became used to unregulated operation. It is the patients who are at risk of being duped into paying for methods that have little or no benefit or that are even harmful.”

The Progress Educational Trust Director, Sarah Norcross stated that fertility clinics had a reputation for “rushing” new techniques for their infertility patients.

Huge temptation to get overseas treatment

She believed that “For British women who wish to avoid passing Mitochondrial disease to their children, the temptation to travel overseas to access these treatments must be enormous.”

Director Norcross warned infertility patients to be cautious because such unproven treatment can be fatal for the newborn. This subject matter, along with patient confidentiality issues surrounding the three-person baby intensifies the medical community concerns.

Pickup Truck Plunges Into festival, Kills 4

San Diego, California

A pickup truck driven by a member of the US Navy plunged off a San Diego bridge killing four people and injuring nine at a festival below. He is currently facing DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Jake Sanchez, Richard Anthony Sepolio, 25, was alone in the truck when he lost control. This caused the pickup to fall 60 feet into a vendor’s booth at Chicano Park on Saturday afternoon. Sepolio was stationed at the naval base on Coronado Island across the bay from San Diego.

Sepolio stayed hospitalized Sunday with major injuries. His rank not immediately made available.

The people who were killed were Francine Denise Jimenez, 46, and Andre Christopher Banks, 49, both from Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles; and Annamarie Contreras, 50, and Cruz Elias Contreras, 52, of Chandler, Arizona, the San Diego County Medical Examiner said.

The truck crushed four people in the booth, witnesses said.

Furthermore, the city’s Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson said that eight people on the ground were hurt. Seven people had minor to moderate injuries while one suffered serious trauma.

The GMC pickup truck with Texas license plates landed on a vendor’s booth put up for La Raza Run. The crash occurred a few steps away from a stage where a rockabilly band was performing.

On Sunday, mourners assembled at the park to lay flowers and candles and offer prayers for the victims.

Tina Camarillo and her daughter occupied the booth next to the one that was hit, she told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

She said that the truck fell and all she saw was darkness. The glass blew and the canopy fell on her head. Her daughter was running to get her mom.

Iris Jimenez, 29, said she got out of the way just in time. She told the newspaper that if she hadn’t run when she saw the truck coming at her, she would be dead. Pedro Sanchez, Jimenez’s companion, was one of many men who hurried to lift the truck off the victims.

The park is located below the bridge in a mainly Hispanic community in central San Diego.

Retired Marine Corps General Pleads Guilty to Lying to FBI

Retired Marine Corps general James E. Cartwright has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and will be sentenced in January.

Cartwright, 67, was a key member of President Obama’s national security team in his former role as vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He has admitted misleading federal investigators over his discussions with reporters about Iran’s nuclear program in an offense that carries a maximum five year jail term and a $250,000 fine.

At the 30 minute hearing at the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia both Government and defense attorneys recommend that an appropriate sentence for the former Marine Corps general would be from 0-6 months.

However the court is not bound by those guidelines when sentencing takes place on January 17.

After today’s 30 minute hearing, Cartwright, once known as “Obama’s favorite general,” said in a statement: “It was wrong for me to mislead the F.B.I. on November 2, 2012, and I accept full responsibility for this.

“I knew I was not the source of the story and I didn’t want to be blamed for the leak. My only goal in talking to the reporters was to protect American interests and lives; I love my country and continue to this day to do everything I can to defend it.”

General Cartwright’s guilty plea was not for leaking, but for lying to agents who were conducting an investigation into an apparent leak.

Cartwright was vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2007 until 2011.

He is a former fighter pilot who is known for his expertise in the more highly technical areas of cyberwarfare and America’s nuclear enterprise.

Is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange Dead…and what do those strange emails mean?

Could it be that Wiki Leaks founder Julian Assange is dead?

The internet is awash with rumors that he has been assassinated, sparked by three cryptic messages posted on the official WikiLeaks Twitter account.

The twitter messages refer to US Secretary of State John Kerry, Ecuador and the UK Foreign Office and each contain a long series of numbers and lowercase letters.

Social media users have speculated that they may be a “dead man’s switch” which was automatically triggered following the death of Assange.

Coded

It is believed that prominent figures who fear for their lives, have programmed their communication channels to send out coded messages upon their deaths which make sense only to a select few people.

The speculation was increased because immediately after the mystery messages were posted, WikiLeaks tweeted: “Julian Assange’s internet link has been intentionally severed by a state party. We have activated the appropriate contingency plans.”

All four messages have since been retweeted several thousand times by followers of Mr Assange.

Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for more than three years to avoid extradition to Sweden on sex assault allegations.

He fears that if he is deported to Sweden he could then be extradited to the US to face charges over WikiLeaks’ activities.

Concerns about his safety intensified earlier this month after it emerged that Hillary Clinton allegedly asked whether the US military could “drone” Mr Assange whilst she was Secretary of State.

In addition WikiLeaks has repeatedly vowed to release information which it says could torpedo the Democrat nominee’s bid for the White House.

False

In response to the speculation, WikiLeaks volunteer Kelly Kolisnik tweeted a message denying that their founder was dead.

The tweet said: “Julian Assange is alive and well. Rumors circulating that he tweeted out a ‘Dead Mans’ switch are completely false and baseless.”

The problem is, that for now at least, the denial has had little effect on stopping the online social media rumor mill.

US Drilling, Strong Dollar Brings Down Oil Prices

A strong dollar, a rising rig count in the United States, and record OPEC output pulled down oil prices on Monday.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were behind 15 cents from their last settlement. They were trading at $50.20 a barrel at 0710 GMT.

According to traders, WTI was pulled down by another increase in US oil drilling activity.

US drillers added four rigs in the week to October 14. This was indicated in a report by oil services provider Baker Hughes showed on Friday. It was the 16th consecutive week that oil drillers had gone without making cuts, signifying more production to come.

International benchmark Brent crude oil futures also dropped, falling 8 cents from their last settlement to $51.87 a barrel.

A seven-month high of the dollar compared to a basket of other leading currencies on Monday, following an expected hike in US interest rates later this year also weighed on crude prices, traders said.

Fresh production records from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) also weighed on Brent. OPEC pumped out a record 33.6 million barrels of crude oil per day in September.

According to Bernstein Energy in a note to clients on Monday, Elevated inventories of oil, record supply from OPEC year-to-date, and weaker global GDP estimates cause them to lower and flatten their oil price outlook.

“We reduce our Brent forecast to $60 per barrel in 2017 ($70 per barrel before) and $70 per barrel in 2018 ($80 per barrel before),” it added.

Analysts said that traders were wary of driving the market much further down. The reason for this is a plan by OPEC to decrease output. It is part of a scheme to contain a global production overhang. This now stands at about half a million barrels of crude every day in excess of demand.

OPEC plans to meet on November 30 to deliberate on a reduction of around one million barrels a day. The cartel hopes non-OPEC members, specifically Russia, will join a prospective cut.

ANZ bank said that investors are not keen on getting too bearish with Russia conveying interest to join the agreement.

Japan to Speed Up Missile Defense Upgrades

JAPAN – Three government sources said that Japan may fast track about $1 billion of planned expenditure to improve its ballistic missile defenses. This decision is in the heels of missile tests indicating North Korea is close to deploying a more potent medium-range missile.

japan-pac-3-upgradeThe disbursements include money to evaluate a new missile defense layer. This will either be Lockheed Martin’s Aegis Ashore or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. Aegis Ashore is a land-based variety of the ballistic missile defense system utilized by vessels in the Sea of Japan.

The sources familiar with the proposal said it covers funds to upgrade the range and accuracy of PAC-3 Patriot batteries. The sources requested no to be named since they are not allowed to speak with the media.

However, the same sources noted that the rollout of Aegis Ashore or THAAD could still take years. Further, the companies involved in production of Patriot missile batteries, such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Raytheon, are unlikely to supply upgrades much quicker. Most probably, due to limited capacity to speed up already tight production schedules.

The Sankei newspaper reported earlier that up to 300 billion yen ($2.9 billion) of defense spending will be involved in a third auxiliary budget. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration has yet to acknowledge whether it will request legislators to endorse additional expenses before discussions begin on next year’s budget.

Pyongyang’s evident technological advancement on missiles has been sooner than expected. A senior Japanese military commander said earlier this month that this exposes Japan to a heightened threat.

North Korea fired a missile over Japan for the first time in 1998. Since then, Pyongyang and Tokyo have been wedged in an arms race.

Musudan ballistic missile renders SM-3 obsolete

North Korea has test-fired more than 21 ballistic missiles and managed two nuclear tests so far this year. On June 22, a medium-range Musudan missile achieved a height of 1,000 km (620 miles) on a lobbed arc. At this height, the missiles are beyond the range of SM-3 missiles deployed on Aegis destroyers at the Sea of Japan. The SM-3 missiles are designed to hit warheads at the edge of space.

japan-patriotThat puts older PAC-3 Patriot missiles guarding major cities like Tokyo as a last line of defense. Their enhancement program will not provide the initial upgraded batteries until 2020, in time for the Tokyo Olympics.

Pyongyang’s Rodong missile has warheads that travel at speeds of up to 3 km (2 miles) per second. Meanwhile, payloads on rockets like the Musudan plummet from space at least twice as fast.

Japan plans to obtain a more formidable version of the SM-3 it is jointly developing with the United States. However, it is not known when the first will be deployed.

Germany Says Tesla’s Use of Term ‘Autopilot’ is Misleading

Tesla’s (TSLA.O) advertises their electric vehicles as having an autopilot function. However, the German government views the term “autopilot” as deceptive. On Sunday, German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt asked the company to stop advertising the autopilot feature of the electric cars.

According to a report by Bild am Sonntag, (BamS), the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) wrote a formal request letter to Tesla about the commercial. A spokesperson for the ministry said, “It can be confirmed that a letter to Tesla exists with the request to no longer use the misleading term autopilot for the driver assistance system of the car”.
Tesla Introduces Self-Driving Features However, Tesla defended the autopilot function in defining the system as an additional safety feature. A spokeswoman for Tesla reiterated that the system operates alongside a human driver. She also said that the autopilot function had been used for decades in aerospace technology. Tesla’s autopilot includes cameras, radar even ultrasonic sensors to automatically steer, change lanes and adjust speed depending on the traffic situations. Tesla also pointed out to their customers that the system still entails drivers to always be vigilant when driving.

Tesla’s Autopilot function includes cameras, radar even ultrasonic sensors to automatically steer, change lanes and adjust speed depending on the traffic situation. Tesla also pointed out to their customers that the system still requires drivers to always be vigilant when driving.

The spokeswoman also said, “Just as in an airplane, when used properly, Autopilot reduces driver workload and provides an added layer of safety when compared to purely manual driving”.

The KBA, under Minister Dobrindt’s supervision, warned Tesla car owners that they need to operate their vehicles under continuous attention and must remain cautious of traffic regulations.

In a letter KBA sent to Tesla, it said, “In order to prevent misunderstanding and incorrect customers’ expectations, we demand that the misleading term Autopilot is no longer used in advertising the system.”

Tesla’s Autopilot received serious criticism after the May 7 incident, wherein the driver of a Tesla Model S was killed using the system. The vehicle collided with a truck in Florida while using the Autopilot function.

Kaepernick ‘Booed’ by Buffalo fans

Buffalo fans on Sunday booed San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick as he carried on his national anthem protest previous to delivering a discouraging performance against the Bills.

The quarterback arrived at New Era Field in New York giving tribute to Muhammad Ali. He wore a T-shirt with a picture of the boxing legend and civil rights campaigner.

Kaepernick kneeled during the United States national anthem as he has done all season. Two team mates joined him as a police officer stood immediately behind the trio.

A number of 49er players raised their right fists in another form of protest.

Sections of the crowd started chanting “USA, USA,” before the anthem. But Kaepernick took issue later at any suggestion that his stand was unnationalistic.

“I don’t understand what’s un-American about fighting for liberty and justice for everybody, for the equality this country says it stands for,” Kaepernick told reporters after being heckled prior to the game and out on the field.

The silent protest he claims is against social injustice and police brutality has divided views among National Football League fans since the pre-season.

Dismal 49ers performance

He was called up to start for the underachieving 49ers against the Bills.

In the second quarter, he connected with a pass to wide receiver Toney Smith. This was his first touchdown pass in 364 days, for a 53-yard catch-and-run goal.

However, highlights were few and far in between as the Bills whipped the 49ers 45 -16. Kaepernick connected with 13 of 29 passes for 187 yards.

Video uploaded on social media showed various anti-Kaepernick reaction as well as indications of support.

He said that he was undeterred by the hostility of some of the crowd. He added that he was focused on playing so he wasn’t really listening to what was going on in the stands.

Sightseeing in Ultralight Aircraft is Pyongyang’s Latest Fad

Up to a few months ago, a 150-meter (492-foot) tall tower across the river from Kim Il Sung Square is your only option if you wanted a bird’s eye view of North Korea. These days, you can climb aboard an ultralight aircraft – if you have the cash.

Foreign tourism firms are looking to lure visitors with unique things to do besides visit war museums and political monuments. Due to this, a Pyongyang flying club began offering quick flights over some of the capital’s foremost sights.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supports the endeavor. Moreover, he promised to give North Koreans more contemporary and cultured ways to spend their free time.

The tours started late July and are operated by the Mirim flying club from a fancy new facility on an old airfield.

At least 4,000 North Koreans, along with hundreds of foreigners from 12 countries have gone up in the ultralight since, according to officials.

The flights go precisely over some of Pyongyang’s most iconic locations. These include the May Day stadium, Kim Il Sung Square area, the torch-tipped Juche Tower, and the Munsu Water Park.

Before the tour can get off the ground, considerations of sites best not exposed to flyovers were almost definitely a factor. Further, club officials inspect photos taken from the air after each flight.

Viewing the city from almost 6,500 feet while leisurely making your way through the skies offers quite a unique perspective. Tourists and most residents had never been able to achieve these feats before.

Expensive aerial tour

The flights aren’t cheap, though. A 25-minute flight from the airstrip to Kim Il Sung Square and the Juche Tower goes for about $150. Shorter flights, which only fly around the proximate area of the flight club are offered at more affordable prices. Prices start at around $65.

Club officials would not say how much but prices for North Koreans are much cheaper.

Man’s Penis Amputated After Getting Stuck for Four Days In Bottle

Honduras – A man’s penis was amputated after it got stuck for four days in a plastic bottle he used as a sex toy.

The creative man thought the drinks container would be the next best thing in place of a woman. But the humiliated 50-year-old left it for four days before getting medical help, causing it to suffer necrosis. This is a type of injury which causes cells to die.

The man reached the hospital with bottle still attached. Medics had no choice but to remove the organ since the penis had turned black and had started to decay.

The urologist who performed the surgery, Doctor Dennis Chrinos, said that the patient’s urethra had to be repositioned so he would still be able to urinate. However, he will never be able to have sex again.

He added that it is a strange case but it has happened before.

“We had a 50-year-old patient, that, because he didn’t have a girlfriend or a wife, wanted to relieve his sexual frustration. So he put his penis in a bottle and this caused the death and necrosis of the penis. When he arrived four days later we had to amputate the penis completely because it was completely dead.

Stuck penis may die within 4 hours

When you insert your penis into a bottle, it causes a tightening in the blood vessels of the penis and within four hours you can lose the penis. What made it worse for the patient is that he didn’t get the medical attention in time. This caused the penis to begin to decay and die completely.

This isn’t the first time a penis has been lost in the country due to bottle use.

Four years ago a similar case occurred when a man called Choluteca, stuck his member into a glass bottle.
