UN, US Request For Aid to Pour In Yemen as Houthi Support Truce

The Houti-controlled administration of Yemen accepted a 72-hour ceasefire beginning on Wednesday. The break in fighting is aimed to allow help to reach areas isolated by months of conflict. These places seriously require humanitarian aid.

A governing council comprised of the Iranian-aligned Houthi group and influential local allies insisted a Saudi-backed Arab coalition halt military attacks. They should also revoke restrictions on air, sea and land transport. It was the council’s first statement on the truce.

A cessation of hostilities between the warring factions will start at 2359 local time (2059 GMT) on Wednesday, the United Nations said on Monday. The truce raises hopes of an end to a conflict that has killed thousands of civilians and left people starving.

The council made know its “positive engagement” with the ceasefire plan. It added that Yemen needed an immediate, comprehensive, and lasting truce without preconditions. This includes what it called an end to the blockade of the Yemeni people.

During the ceasefire, aid agencies may attempt to get to families trapped in villages and towns. The areas where fighting and coalition-enforced travel restrictions left residents short of food and in critical need of medical supplies.

“Hopefully, this nationwide cessation will provide humanitarian agencies and organizations the opportunity to respond in areas that have been cut off or hard to reach in all of Yemen,” UN’s Yemen Humanitarian Coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said.

yemen-seeking-aidAll combatants to cease hostilities and military movement

US Secretary of State John Kerry said in Washington that the ceasefire necessitates all parties to stop military activities. They should also help expedite the distribution of humanitarian assistance.

Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies have implemented air strikes and positioned troops in Yemen in backing the exiled government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. The Houthi’s toppled Hadi’s administration in 2015.

The 19-month long war has worsened Yemen’s already critical humanitarian needs by raising levels of malnutrition and enlistment of child soldiers. Furthermore, the fighting inflicted damage on schools and infrastructure.

Barkley: Even with Durant, Warriors Still A Flawed Team

Charles Barkley didn’t want Kevin Durant to sign with the Golden State Warriors. Now that he’s there, he isn’t sure Durant changes things.

The Warriors are still a flawed team in Barkley’s mind.

“Can they rebound the ball? They’re going to still be shooting jumpers. They’re not going to get any low-post scoring. Can that type of play hold up through the rigors of the NBA playoffs? I’m still going to say the same thing I’ve always said: No.” Barkley said Tuesday.

Golden State won a record 73 games in the regular season. They blew a 3 – 1 lead, however, in the NBA Finals and lost to Cleveland. In the offseason, the Warriors signed Durant.

kevin-durant-warriors-1That move made the Warriors the favorites to reclaim the title they won in 2015. Barkley said Golden State was lucky then since their path was filled with teams impaired by injuries. Cleveland was already without Kevin Love in the Finals series and lost Kyrie Irving near the conclusion of Game 1.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were healthy last year, and Barkley picked them to defeat the Warriors.

During a lunch prior to TNT’s “Inside the NBA” studio team was elected to the Broadcasting Hall of Fame, Barkley said that the Warriors couldn’t play small ball and win a championship if every team they played was healthy. “I told you Cleveland was going to beat them and they did,” he added.

On Tuesday, Barkley and the team will host their show outside Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. The Cavaliers will receive their championship rings before facing New York in their season opener. In the nightcap of TNT’s doubleheader, the Warriors will play San Antonio.

Pissed at Durant

Barkley was upset that Durant left Oklahoma City for an easier chance at a title with the star-laden Warriors. Golden State already has two-time MVP Stephen Curry and fellow All-Stars Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.

Barkley said that if the Warriors win the title, it wouldn’t mean as much to Durant as it would have in Oklahoma. Durant had played in the city since the Thunder franchise moved from Seattle after his rookie season in 2008. Durant has been jeered in rival arenas since his decision. He has also infuriated some of his former fans with what seems to be disparagements of Russell Westbrook and his previous team.

“He made himself a villain by taking all these shots at Oklahoma City for no reason,” Barkley said. “He left, he’s happy, so shut up. When you’re taking shots at Russell and those guys, that’s not necessary

After Much Debate, House Where Hitler was Born Will Go Down

Austrian Government will tear down the house where Adolf Hitler was born after long years of debate. According to an Austrian newspaper Die Presse, the Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka said a committee of experts decided to demolish the house. This prevents the house in becoming a crucial point to any neo-Nazis movement.

braunau-am-innBraunau Am Inn

Gerlinde Pommer, a retiree, owns the guesthouse, Braunau am Inn. Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, on the top floor of the Inn near the Austro-German border.

Intense debate surrounds the former guesthouse, concepts from destroying to converting the building for another use.

The house was also the subject in years of legal battle between Pommer and the Austrian Government. Since 1972, the government rented the guesthouse in a staggering amount of $5,300 a month to prevent any inappropriate use of the building.

Pommer constantly rejects government offers to sell the three-story building. She refused any renovation work as the building stood empty for the last five years.

New building to be built over the old one

The former guesthouse served as a facility for people with disabilities. The Austrian Government decided to have a new building erected to be used for administrative or charitable purposes. Minister Sobotka told the Die Presse: “The Hitler house will be torn down. The foundations can remain but a new building will be erected. It will be used by either a charity or the local authorities”.

According to the ministry spokesman, legalities to seize the properties were still “under way”. The Parliament has not decided to approve any construction of a building.

The government decision to destroy the building upsets several local communities. Some of them propose that the building can be a refugee center. While others pushed to convert the building into a museum dedicated to Austria’s liberation from the Nazi government. Cultural organizations firmly oppose the former guesthouse demolition. They argue that the building was part of a historic past and should be under heritage protection.

However, in the past years, local authorities prohibited any movement of neo-Nazi sympathizers going to Braunau am Inn. Unfortunately, despite the efforts, it still draws attention.

f-hitler-demolishA teacher in Braunau said, “I’ve even witnessed people from Italy or from France coming here… for adoration purposes. One Frenchman, a history teacher I think it was, came and asked me for Hitler’s birthplace… It’s hard to understand.”

During the Nazi regime, the house drew thousands of tourists where it became a shrine for Hitler. When the Nazis began to lose command in 1944, the house was shut down.

Regular Exposure to Toxic Chemicals Costs the US $340 Billion Annually

Regular contact to plastic materials such as plastic bottles, food containers, toys, cosmetics, and flame retardants containing “endocrine-disrupting chemicals” may result to increase of toxic and potentially lead to medical conditions.

Health problems. because of regular exposure to these chemicals cost the US $340 billion per year in health costs and loss of wages. This was stated by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center.

Childrens’ developing brains are more vulnerable to develop health conditions from chemicals, said Dr. Leonardo Trasande, a Professor at NYU Langone and lead investigator of this study. According to Trasande there are simple steps to reduce exposure to “endocrine-disrupting” chemicals at home.

“Families can eat organic. People can avoid the use of pesticides in their homes to get rid of unwanted creatures. They can avoid aluminium can food consumption. They can stop using microwaving plastic and machine-dishwashing plastic containers,” Transande said. He also  to avoid using plastic containers with the number 3, 6, or 7 on the bottom.

plastic-containersTrasande added “simply air out their houses every few days,” helps remove chemical dusts from your home specially flame retardants.

Hormonal Effects

Studies over the past three decades show how regular exposure to these chemicals have negative effects on human health. Furthermore, evidence shows endocrine-disrupting chemicals can interfere with the body’s natural sex hormones.

Harmful chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA) are found in food cans. Phthalates is an ingredient for making cosmetics and food containers. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) can be found in furniture and flame retardants. Lastly, there are pesticides such as chlorpyrifos and organophosphates.

The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology team at NYU reviewed the levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in blood and urine samples. These came from five thousand volunteers from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

An advanced computer model was then used to estimate total disease effects that resulted from exposure to levels of these harmful chemicals. Trasande and his colleagues also calculated the estimated health cost for each disease. The total came up to an annual cost of $340 billion. Worst of all, most financial headaches resulted from neurological damage in unborn children.

Trasande said people talk about cost to manufacturer. What they never really talk about are the benefits of regulating the use of these harmful chemicals.

“Typically, when policy discussions are had about regulation, the arguments are one-sided,” Trasande added.

This study is intended “to facilitate a transparent dialogue about the real and substantial tradeoffs for human health. The things that we make or do by failing to act to protect against the chemicals of greatest concern,” said Trasande.

Chemical Regulatory and Policies

On June 2016, President Obama signed into law the revised Toxic Substance Control Act, “the major law that reviews chemicals for their safety and decides whether they should be allowed for use in the broad environment,” including furniture, cosmetics and electronics.

Trasande added,”that law presumed that chemicals are innocent until proven guilty”.

The June overhaul, also known as the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety Act, means “the Environmental Protection Agency is on a fast timeline to deal with the requirements associated with that action,” said Frankie Wood-Black, a principal of Sophic Pursuits, Inc. and an instructor at Northern Oklahoma College.

The timing and actions of the EPA intrigue “all of us in the regulatory world,” said Wood-Black.

“There is an opportunity here to ensure effective implementation of the law,” Trasande said.

Crucial for similar tests to be done in the U.S.

Andrea Gore, a professor at the University of Teas at Austin and Trasande calculated the costs based on prediction of exposures to the harmful chemicals in the European Union.

“It is important that they did a similar study in the US, because it shows that costs of endocrine-disrupting chemicals to health are an international problem,” Gore added, “learning about exposures in one part of the world can inform decisions in other places that may be considering whether or not to allow or ban a chemical.”

tsca-reformGore was not a part of the new study. However, she is a co-author of some studies cited by Trasande.

“These authorities have a broader definition of endocrine disrupting-chemicals than that used by the US EPA,” according to Michele La Merril, a developmental toxicologist and an assistant professor at University of California-Davis.

“This exposes a weakness in the archaic US EPA definition and indicates a need for the US EPA to include endocrine-disrupting effects they currently do not consider, such as obesity,” La Merrill said.

Report says Sacramento Could Earn Billions From Legalized Pot

A study released on Monday showed that California’s state capital region could generate $4.2 billion in business. Moreover, it could bring in 20,000 jobs if it becomes a center for legalized marijuana industry. Researchers released the study weeks before voters agreed whether to permit recreational use of the drug.

Truth Enterprises, a cannabis investment company, commissioned the study from the University of the Pacific in Stockton. The company is one of several businesses relying on voters to legalize pot next month.

“The Sacramento region should be to cannabis what Detroit is to automobiles in terms of both a center for innovation as well as production,” said Truth Enterprises’ managing partner Daniel Conway. “This region has the ability to be to cannabis what Napa and Sonoma are to wine.”

If local leaders decide to restrict the type and number of marijuana businesses, legalization would bring as few as 1,600 jobs, the study showed. It would also generate about $322 million in profits, wages and other economic effects.

Polls suggest voters in the most populous US state are likely to legalize marijuana on November 8. This would immediately create a huge marketplace, making California the fifth state to allow recreational pot use.

potSacramento’s proximity to farmlands and agricultural processing facilities make it a good choice for focusing some of the business in the area. Moreover, tourist destinations like Lake Tahoe and Napa Valley as well as population hubs such as the San Francisco Bay Area are nearby.

Political and local business leaders for a long time have sought for ways to revive the slightly faded feel of the Sacramento area. You can still find empty storefronts tarnish numerous shopping centers and deserted houses with boarded-up windows regardless of almost a decade of slow recovery from the Great Recession.

Downtown starts an enormous makeover as plans for several new shops and restaurants are around a new arena for the NBA Kings are acted on. Further, the restaurant scene is growing and the city is close to winning a major league soccer franchise.

Job opportunities too many to disregard

Chief executive officer of the Sacramento Region Business Association Joshua Woods said that the entire Sacramento business community is looking at it with different eyes today. With this many jobs at stake, you can’t ignore it, he added.

Woods said that the University of the Pacific study presents the first hard look at the possible economic impact of the marijuana business on the Sacramento region. However, that does not mean his group or other political and business leaders are prepared to make the area a hub.

For that to happen, policymakers would need to be convinced that an active marijuana growing and processing industry would not also be an attraction for addiction, crime and other problems.

Britain: Drones to Ram Passenger Jets in Radical Test

Sparked by fears of a disaster in British skies, Drones will be intentionally crashed into passenger planes as part of a radical testing program.

Ministers required the tests following a string of near misses, some in the vicinity of major airports.

The ministers have pledged more than 250,000 pounds to pay for a private study. The research would be to determine the results of drone impacting the fuselage or a window of a plane.

Pilots warn that it is only a matter of time before there an accident occurs. At one point, a close call was being reported each week.

Police launched an inquiry just this week (October 10) after two sightings of a drone being flown recklessly near Heathrow Airport.

Senior officers called the move dangerous and illegal. An extensive search, however, failed to identify the culprit.

The classified tests were ordered by the Department of Transport, together with the Ministry of Defense and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Qinetiq is doing the tests, and are given free run of 5,000 square miles of regulated airspace in Snowdonia, Wales.

The decision to conduct the tests is in response to rising concerns from pilots. They stated that drones, having heavy lithium batteries, could smash through a plane’s windscreen.

The tests come as the Department of Transport plans to ultimately publish a long-awaited consultation on the future of drones.

The amount of drones in the skies has come out of control in recent years. Moreover, there is an increasing demand for their use in industry as well as photography and leisure.

Parcel delivery firms, such as Amazon and Royal Mail, are assessing their ability in easing the load on the roads.

Police and immigration officials already use drones for surveillance, delivery emergency supplies, and to monitor remote wildlife.

Ministy of Defense’s Dr. Peter Downer disclosed that the study have been given go signal at a recent meeting of leading industry figures.

drone-swarmThe aviation expert stressed that much more work needs to be done to underscore the risks they present.

More than 2 million drones are now in circulation in Britain according to the National Air Traffic Service.

Good quality models, in which several have been involved in high-profile incidents, are available for as little as 500 pounds.

Too many serious incidents

In just one six-month period, officials investigated 23 near misses between aircraft and drones. Twelve of these incidents were given the most serious rating or risk.

There were several serious incidents over the summer, including a near miss between a drone and a plane transporting 62 passengers arriving at Newquay Airport.

There was also a report of a drone flying just a hundred feet from a Boeing 757 jet while in a ‘critical phase of flight ‘ near Manchester Airport.

Rules that limit the altitude of drones to less than 400 feet (122 meters) and stay clear from aircraft and airports exist.

Aviation experts and airport owners are petitioning the government for tougher regulation and stricter penalties for those who inappropriately use the device.

Cessation of Hostilities in Yemen to Begin Wednesday

A UN envoy for Yemen finally received commitments from all of the country’s opposing groups. He then said that a 72-hour ceasefire in Yemen is scheduled on Wednesday night.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, UN Special Envoy for Yemen, said that the termination of hostilities would begin at 2359 local time (2059 GMT) on Wednesday, the United Nations said in a statement. The ceasefire agreement could be renewed after the initial three –day period.

“The Special Envoy welcomes the restoration of the Cessation of Hostilities, which will spare the Yemeni people further bloodshed and will allow for the expanded delivery of humanitarian assistance,” the statement said.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdel-Malek al-Mekhlafi made an announcement on his official Twitter feed earlier Monday. He said that President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi had consented to a 72-hour ceasefire with the likelihood of it being extended.

He added that the president agreed to the extension of the ceasefire if the other party abides by it. Also, they should lift the siege of Taiz, and activate the DCC (De-escalation and Coordination Committee).

The DCC is the United Nations-supported military commission in-charge for administering ceasefires in Yemen.

yemen-peace-talksHadi’s displaced government has been calling for humanitarian access for Taiz. The Houthi rebels, who overran Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in 2014, largely surround the city. Government forces retain control of only one of four entry routes.

The Suadi-backed loyal forces loyal to Hadi hold Yemen’s southern part, which it shares with local tribes. Meanwhile, the Iranian-aligned Houthis and their allies, militants dedicated to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, control most of the country’s northern half.

Saudis doubtful of peace efforts

Saudi Arabia will accept a ceasefire if the Houthis agreed to one, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel-al-Jubeir said on Monday. However, he was doubtful about peace efforts after previous ceasefire attempts failed.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies have executed air strikes and positioned troops in Yemen to support Hadi’s government. According to UN estimates, around 10,000 people, including 3.800 civilians, have died in the conflict.

SNL Parody ‘Stinks!’, Boring and Unfunny Show says Trump

Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump was not impressed on a Saturday Night Live (SNL)show, where Alec Baldwin spoofed him.

In a statement posted on his twitter, he says “Watched Saturday Night Live hit job on me. Time to retire the boring and unfunny show. Alex Baldwin portrayal stinks. Media rigging election!”

NBC’s highly popular comic institution ‘Saturday Night Live’ is one of the longest running TV show in America, known for making the most controversial and memorable spoofs. The show pokes fun at politicians like Richard Nixon tagged as an ‘unhinged bigot and Gerald Ford satirized as a nincompoop.

Additionally, Bill Clinton was caricatured as a good-hearted but self-indulgent fast-food junkie, George W. Bush ridiculed as a likable fool and Sarah Palin mocked as an ignorant lightweight.

They all suffered from an offensive parody by SNL but none of them opposed the show’s management.

trump-vs-baldwinTrump said there was a long list of people and institutions out to discredit his credibility. He mentioned the news media, corporate insiders and members of his own Republican Party. Furthermore, he included the Democratic Party especially Hillary Clinton, and some women who recently accused him of making unwanted sexual advances.

The SNL spoof that upset Trump featured Alec Baldwin {as Trump}. Baldwin during their mock presidential debate, said to Kate Mckinnon {as Clinton} , “I’m going to huff. I’m going to puff. And I’m going to blow this whole thing.”

‘I love kids so much, i marry them’

The parody also mocked Clinton but not nearly as harsh. When asked if he is a role model for children, Baldwin {as Trump} replied, “I’ve been helping kids my whole life. I love kids. I love them so much, I marry them.”

Baldwin {as Trump} is shown stealthily on the stage while Clinton is talking, as if to intimidate or distract her.

At one point, the Trump character is shown arguing that women who have accused former President Bill Clinton of alleged sexual improprieties “need to be respected. They need their voices heard.” The faux debate moderator interjects, “What about all the women accusing you of sexual assault?” Trump’s character replies, “They need to shut the hell up.”

Pentagon Casts Cautious Stance on Latest Yemen Missile Attack

The Pentagon refused to say on Monday whether the USS Mason was targeted again by missiles launched from Yemen on Saturday, as originally believed. It said an investigation was under way to find out what happened.

Any indication that the Houthis targeted the guided-missile destroyer on Saturday could have military ramifications. The United States has warned to strike back again should its ships come under fire from Houthi-controlled Yemen territory.

After two confirmed attempts to hit the USS Mason with coastal cruise missiles last week, the United States executed missile strikes on radar sites in Yemen on Thursday.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told a new briefing that they are still evaluating the situation. He said that there are still some aspects that they are trying to clarify given the potential threat to “our people.”

uss-masonChief of naval operations Admiral John Richardson revealed the latest incident on Saturday during an event in Baltimore. He said that the USS Mason appears to have come under attack once again in the Red Sea.

Cook acknowledged that the crew of the USS Mason responded appropriately when they detected what appeared to be a missile threat.

Nevertheless, US officials warned that facts from the incident were still under evaluation. It was not known when a conclusion might be made about how many, if any, missiles were fired at the destroyer.

The retaliatory missile strikes by the US on Thursday knocked out three coastal radar sites in Houthi territory. It was the first military action by Washington against suspected Houthi-controlled targets in Yemen’s conflict.

The war in Yemen between the Houthi group, backed by troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, and the Saudi Arabia-supported internationally recognized government of Abd Rabbu Mansour al-Hadi, has been going on since March 2015.

The Houthi movement has denied firing on the USS Mason. However, it did promise to retaliate following a Saudi-led strike on a funeral assembled in Sanaa, Yemen’s Houthi-held capital, last week. the attack killed more than 140 people, according to one UN estimate.

The US has denounced the strike and vowed to reassess US military assistance to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen. Yemenis, closely associated the US military with the campaign.

On Saturday, a fact-finding body established by the Saudi-led coalition attributed a string of factors for the funeral strikes. The investigative body said the coalition received inaccurate information from Yemeni military officials that armed Houthi leaders were in the area at the time.

No justification for air-strike on 600 people

Rep. Ted Lieu, a leading campaigner in Congress for a pause in U.S. cooperation with the Saudi-led coalition, stated that explanation seemed to him like an acknowledgement of a war crime.

He said that even if some rebels had been present at the funeral, that would not justify an air-strike that targeted more than 600 civilians.

He added that the US also needs to instantly cease aiding and abetting a Saudi coalition that has committed war crimes.

PepsiCo to cut-down calorie content by 2025

Indra Nooyi Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo committed on Monday to cut down calorie count of the company’s famous beverages as they look at the counter health concerns about sugar-sweetened beverages. As part of their new sustainability initiative, they plan to double water efficiency companywide.

Nooyi told CNBC “Over the last decade, we have made progress in reducing sugar.” She added, “but there’s a lot more we needed to do because countries which loved sugar were growing faster than countries which were consuming lower-sugar products.”

pepsico-ceoPepsiCo pledged to reduce at least two-thirds of the companies famous beverages. It will contain 100 calories or less than 12-ounce per serving by 2025. The company’s goal is to increase its efforts to zero or lower-calorie products.

Available in about 180 countries worldwide, the company earns over $1 billion yearly. Most of this revenue, from the sale of its most famous product the sugar-based Pepsi drink. PepsiCo is definitely taking a huge commitment. The decrease of calories will be followed by several communities to raise tax on sugar-based drinks as a way to fight rising incidents of obesity worldwide.

“Technology breakthroughs right now are resulting in better-tasting colas, almost as good as the full-sugar colas, but with lower calories,” said Nooyi. “So we’re now faced with [an] interesting opportunity to step the consumer down to lower sweetness levels.”

Today almost 25% of the company’s global revenue is coming from soda based products. They also make Pure Leaf iced tea products and Starbucks unsweetened ready-to-drink coffee. Furthermore, there are several sparkling flavoured water and juice under the Gatorade sports drink brand.

According to Mintel estimated 74% of total market shares belongs to diet carbonated soft drinks. Diet category is around 26%, which makes carbonated soft drinks the majority of the category sales industrywide.

Mintel added that the said diet soda business has been decreasing. This is the result of “negative health perceptions surrounding artificial sugar. Also helping the decline is the large number of “better-for-you and low/no calorie beverages available.”

PepsiCo’s initiative to decrease calorie isn’t limited to North America. According to the company’s CEO, as part of the initiative, it has lowered 30% sugar of 7-Up products in Mexico, UK, China and India.

“The consumer can’t tell the difference, and that’s the greatest thing about all of the R&D work, which is now yielding results,” she said.

They also have started efforts to lower-down sodium in products including the snacks sold by the Frito-Lay division.

“By applying the seasoning differently, we can actually still make it a salty snack, but with lower sodium levels, and that’s what we have managed to do with… our products in countries like the U.K. and China, where we’ve reduced salt levels significantly,” she said.

PepsiCo said by 2025, three-quarters of its global foods portfolio will contain sodium volumes not exceeding 1.3 milligrams per calorie. Moreover, not more than 1.1 grams of saturated fat per 100 calories.

The company had made a significant progress and is now frying snacks using a “heart-healthy oil”. The CEO added that they have developed a new frying technique to reduce saturated fat levels by 20%. On the other hand, increasing the machine’s capacity by 25%.

pepsicoHello goodness

As part of their “Hello Goodness Initiative”, PepsiCo is now taking its vending machines to contain most company products. These include Frito-Lay’s baked chips, Sabra hummus products and other healthier beverages.

Hello Goodness Machine sales are moving higher than other vending machines. She said “because all of a sudden, people look at this and go, ‘Gee, I can eat everything I want out of this machine rather than, you know, having to go to convenience store or going to my pantry to bring stuff.”

PepsiCo’s sustainability goal is to reduce the company’s total carbon footprint and to increase water savings worldwide.

“We cannot keep operating in communities if we don’t have prudent water goals or greenhouse gas emissions goals because societies won’t allow us in,” said Nooyi. “So I think in many ways, what we are doing with our goals right now is much more — you know a way to drive our performance on a sustained basis, so we are financially motivated with a very strong conscious.”

By 2030, the company’s target is to reduce 20% greenhouse gas emissions across its valued chain. This includes everything from production activities, packaging to transportation, and its agricultural supplies worldwide.

PepsiCo said they are now working to reach their customers and business suppliers to reduce emissions.

The company is targeting “15% improvement in water efficiency of its direct agricultural supply chain in high water-risk areas by 2025”. That means saving equivalent to the total amount of water used in manufacturing operations.

The water saving efforts would lead to 100% replenishing of its water consumption in manufacturing operations within “high-water-risk areas.”

PepsiCo committed that it would “improve water efficiency of its direct manufacturing operations by 25% by 2025”. This is in addition to the 25% savings the company achieved since 2016.
