Kentucky: Former Champion Sprinter Tyson Gay’s Daughter,15, Dead in Shooting

Lexington Police reported the death of Trinity Gay, the 15-year-old daughter of the former world champion sprinter Tyson Gay.

tyson-gays-daughterAccording to a report, Trinity was shot in the neck during a gunfight but was not involved in the shooting herself. An eye-witness account indicates the bullet came from two vehicles whose occupants exchanged gunfire. The cars were parked outside a restaurant near the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington around 4 AM (0800 GMT). She was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center onboard a private vehicle. The teenager later died of her injury.

During an interview with a local TV network, Lex 18, Tyson Gay who lives in Lexington said, “She didn’t make it. I’m so confused. She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened,”

tyson-gayTyson participated in the Rio Olympics and was part of the US Olympic Team for the 100m relay event. He was the second-fastest 100m runner next to Usain Bolt. However, in 2013 he tested positive for a banned substance which prevented him from joining the Olympic Games for a year.

Trinity was also an athlete and played for Lafayette High School, where she was studying.

Meanwhile, the sports community sent out their condolences on Tweeter. The US Track and Field Team tweeted, that their “thoughts and prayers” goes to Tyson and his loved ones, they added, “as they mourn the tragic & senseless loss of his daughter, Trinity”.

Manny Caulk, the Fayette County School Superintendent condemned the shooting incidence. He told the Lexington Herald-Leader newspaper, “Our hearts are broken this morning over the loss of Trinity to this tragic and senseless act of violence”.

The commissioner of the Kentucky High School Athletics Association, Julian Tackett said, “A life of such potential cut so tragically short”.

Two suspects arrested

Police identified the two vehicles as a gray Dodge Charger and a dark colored sports car with tinted windows.

In a police statement, the incident occurred outside the Cook Out restaurant in Lexington City. Authorities initiated a murder investigation regarding the shooting incident. They already located the Dodge Charger and apprehended two people for questioning. However, authorities are still on the lookout for the other vehicle.
