On Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, Los Angeles County Sheriff Sgt. Steve Owen was shot and killed while responding to a burglary call in West Avenue J-7, Lancaster California. The suspect was arrested after seizing Owen’s patrol car and crashing into another police vehicle. He then ran and hid in a nearby home occupied by two teenagers.
Sgt. Steve Owen was a 29-year veteran of the sheriff’s department and won the Medal of Valor in 2014.
He was shot in the face with a large caliber bullet and died at a hospital about two hours after the shoot-out. His mother, children, and wife, a detective in the Sheriff Department’s Arson/Explosives Detail, were beside him until he expired.
Mayor R. Rex Parris, who knew Owen for 10 years said “They brought him back three times. They worked on him for an hour but they were never able to stabilize him,”
“I just left 100 officers crying. It’s indescribable seeing that many sheriff’s deputies in tears,” Parris added.
Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement after the shooting praising Owen’s “honor and courage” and saying flags at the Capitol will be flown at half-staff.
They also held a solemn prayer vigil for Owen outside his local sheriff’s office.
Meanwhile, another deputy officer was injured and now receiving treatment at the hospital. Authorities said that he was not shot.

Authorities have not released the name of the suspect; He was identified as a parolee and was brought to the hospital due to gunshot wounds on his upper body.
