Superheroes Get Together for 6-Year-Old Jacob Hall’s Funeral

Police officers, firefighters and locals dressed as superheroes wearing capes and masks attended Jacob Hall’s funeral on Wednesday. Jacob was the 6 year old boy who died in a schoolyard shooting last week.

superhero-funeralThe incident happened when a teenager opened fire on Jacob’s school at Townville Elementary School after killing his own father. Jacob died on Saturday from complications acquired from the gunshot wound.

He was laid to rest wearing his Batman costume in a highly emotional ceremony at Oakdale Baptist Church. In contrast to the heartbreaking ceremony, balloons, superhero figurines and people dressed as superheroes gave life to the funeral.

renae-hall-farewell-to-jacobThe boy’s mother, Renae Hall said to FOX Carolina, that her son loved superheroes and “wanted to save everybody”. She knew there would be children attending the service and encouraged everyone to dress as superheroes.

John Buckland, dressed as Batman drove his Batmobile from West Virginia to Townville church. He was part of the funeral procession on Wednesday. The family invited Buckland who dresses as superheroes for Heroes 4 higher.

superhero-sendoffJacob’s casket was also adorned with flowers, balloons and figurines. Hall, dressed as Robin, Batman’s sidekick, shook visibly as family members walked with her to the front of the church. She collapsed upon seeing her son’s casket.

Learning the right way from a 6-year-old

Local news station KFOR covered the service. According to the network Buckland said during the service, “Out of this community, the world is learning how to do it right and they’re learning it from a 6-year-old boy”. He added, “Let us take what we’ve learned from Jacob and let it make us a better person”.

Rev. Tim Marcengill said “Last Wednesday, darkness and evil came to Townville. But this Wednesday, there’s grace and faith and hope and love that will win in the end of this superhero story.”

superhero-soldiersAccording to ABC News, at least 1,000 people attended the funeral, hundreds of them dressed as superheroes. Those who could not attend the service expressed their support in social media, by donning superhero outfits and posting them using the hash tag #RIPJacob.
